“This s**t was STOLEN!” Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve GOES OFF on referees after WNBA Finals controversy

Minnesota Lynx HC Cheryl Reeve livid after Breanna Stewart and New York Liberty win 2024 WNBA Finals

Through the first four games of the 2024 WNBA Finals, fans watched on as the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx played elite basketball. In what could have been the best WNBA Finals ever, all eyes were on Game 5 to continue that magic. That magic did continue as head coaches Cheryl Reeve and Sandy Brondello pushed the likes of Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart respectively to give their best.

For most of the game, the battle was fairly fought, until officiating in the second half seemingly turned the game toward the Liberty’s side. When Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve was asked about this in the post-game press conference, she went, and understandably, on the referee decisions.

I know all the headlines will be ‘Reeve cries foul.’ Bring it on. Right? Bring it on. Because this s**t was stolen from us. Bring it on. We know we could have done somethings right. But you shouldn’t have to overcome to that extent. Officiating it is not that hard. If you don’t want to call hold at one end, don’t call it at the other. Be consistent.

Cheryl Reeve said

She added that it was not right to lose the WNBA Finals with such a discrepancy in fouls. With the Liberty receiving 25 free throws to the Lynx’s eight, the discrepancy was evident.

Even the foul Breanna Stewart received that sent the game to overtime came under extreme criticism from NBA superstars and celebrities alike. Reeve was pointing to the fact that officiating dictated the game’s outcome.

That is, other than letting it play out fairly. The New York Liberty received some questionable foul calls to their advantage late in the game. Consequently, they used those free throws to erase the deficit and send the game to overtime.

Cheryl Reeve calls out WNBA officiating for errors throughout the game

As Cheryl Reeve continued her tirade against the officiating, added some words about players to be the decider of the WNBA Finals.

Be consistent, every team asked for that. Sandy asked for that last game. Three of the games in this series, we are talking about the same damn thing…. This is for a championship. For both teams, let them decide it.

The Minnesota Lynx head coach explained

The usually outspoken coach head coach talked about how officiating has been all season long. Now, with this WNBA Finals Game 5 debacle, it has shown its ugly side.

Throughout the season, many fans joined players to call out lopsided and unfair officiating from WNBA referees. Many blatant fouls were not called, whereas some were quick to blow the whistle. Rookie superstar Caitlin Clark bore the brunt of many such calls, which led to her chirping the officials on numerous occasions.

But in this WNBA Finals, it has become all too apparent. Rather than the best players in the world to fight it out amongst themselves, the referees became the talking point. With the league on the rise, its popularity could do better without such negativity creeping in.
