Mac McClung propels NBA legend to follow with his own dunk at age 69

Now that the All-Star Weekend is over, only faded memories remain. One such unforgettable moment came during this year’s AT&T Slam Dunk Contest, with the back-to-back holder of the Slam Dunk Contest crown, Mac McClung, showing off his high-flying acrobatics for the third time in a row. McClung delivered perfect 50-score dunks throughout the night, achieving a historic “three-peat” for the first time in Slam Dunk Contest history.

His remarkable feat has inspired the whole NBA community, gaining a tremendous respect from his peers and former NBA legends like Marques Johnson. Roused by the G-League’s underdog’s breathtaking display, Milwaukee’s 69-year-old legend followed with his own dunk on social media. Accusing the 26-year-old of making him dunk in his twilight years, here’s what the five-time NBA All-Star had to say.

Mac McClung, three-time slam dunk champion. So, what happens? You got Ja Morant saying he’s gonna be at the dunk contest next year, Giannis… don’t be surprised if he participates in the dunk contest. You got Zach Lavine, you got Aaron Gordon, everybody coming out the woodwork. All star game, right here in LA, my home turf, old-school….. this dunk got to get me in.

The clip then cuts to the Milwaukee Bucks legend in his backyard, dunking the ball into the rim. This was unprecedented, considering that the retired NBA player is almost edging on 70. This rejuvenated sense of enthusiasm for slamming the ball can be attributed to McClung, although the “Half Man, Half Amazing” has made it a ritual to dunk on his birthday every year. Since he turned 55 in 2011, he has turned it into a tradition, proving that age doesn’t have to limit physical activity.

The event was particularly fruitful for Mac McClung who is currently under two-way contract with Magic, spending most of his time with the franchise’s G-League team, Osceola Magic. With his third consecutive Slam Dunk trophy, not only the 6’2″ guard has redeemed himself, but also etched his name in the NBA’s history books.

Mac McClung’s earning from Slam Dunk contests supersedes his NBA salary

It’s no surprise that the players of the G-league don’t get the same kind of recognition and money compared to the average NBA player. With a standout victory at the Slam Dunk content on Saturday, McClung took home $100k in prize money, totalling his income from Slam Dunk contests alone at $300k.

However, this amount is significantly lower from his combined career earnings from NBA, with stands at only $132k till now. This startling discovery left fans in frenzy, while also highlighting the difference between playing in the NBA and the G-League.

That said, these numbers are a bit misleading when you consider that the G-League MVP has signed a two-way deal with the Orlando Magic. A two-way contract allows athletes to split their time between the NBA team and their G-League affiliate. Under this contract, McClung is set to earn $578,577.
