Madison Keys defeated Iga Swiatek in a gruelling three set match at the Australian Open 2025 semifinals. This was a rather unexpected victory against the World No. 2 who had been in excellent form throughout the tournament, also having not dropped a set en route to the semifinals.

Back in 2022, Swiatek had lost to Danielle Collins in straight sets at the semifinals of the Australian Open. This time, it was 14th ranked Keys, who beat the Pole with a score of 5-7, 6-1, 7(10)-6(8) in a match that lasted 2 hours and 32 minutes.

The third set was the most challenging one. Swiatek got a crucial break leading 6-5. She had a match point at 40-30 but her serve was broken by Keys. A 10-point tiebreak followed, which was won by the American. An overwhelmed Keys who reached her first Australian Open finals broke down to tears on the court after her triumph at the semifinals.

Madison Keys will face World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the finals

This match marked their sixth encounter, and the second victory of the American over the Pole. Keys first defeated Swiatek at Cincinnati in 2022 where she won in straight sets. Keys now advances to her second Grand Slam final. She was a finalist at the 2017 US Open where she lost in straight sets to fellow American Sloane Stephens, who secured her maiden Grand Slam title.

In the Australian Open 2025 finals which is scheduled to take place on 25th January at Rod Laver Arena, Keys will face World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. This will be their sixth meeting on court, with the American’s sole victory over the Belarusian being at Berlin in 2021.

After a phenomenal 2024 season, Sabalenka has had a strong start this year winning the Brisbane International title. Sabalenka is eyeing to be the first woman in this century to win three consecutive Australian Open titles. Amongst women, a hat trick at the Australian Open has only been achieved by five players so far- Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Martina Hingis.
