It has been a difficult start to the year for Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks. After an impressive December, where they won the 2025 NBA Cup and were on a good run, 2026 has seen the Knicks lose seven of their last nine games. Their latest loss saw them lose 106-99 against the Phoenix Suns at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.
With no Jalen Brunson, who has been their driving force and a fan-favorite in the city of New York, the Knicks have lost three consecutive games and have seen their record drop to 25-17 as they are currently placed at third in the Eastern Conference standings. 1.5 games behind the Boston Celtics. Meanwhile, the Suns remain at seventh place in the Western Conference standings with a 25-17 record.
Before the turn of the year, it looked like it was just a matter of time before the Knicks overtook the Detroit Pistons for the top place in the standings. Unfortunately, their recent slump has seen them drop to third and may drop even lower if things continue this way.
During Brunson’s absence, it was expected that Karl-Anthony Towns would step up and carry the offensive workload. But the Knicks center has not been at his best this season. He is currently averaging just 20.9 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.
The Knicks were down by just three points heading into the fourth quarter on Saturday. In the final moments of the game, Towns attempted a three-point shot with an opportunity to add to the Knicks’ total. Unfortunately, he shot an air-ball, which immediately triggered a loud wave of boos from the home crowd.

Despite the disappointing loss, Towns did have a good game against the Suns as he recorded a double-double with a stat line of 23 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists. But it was the Suns’ bench that won them the game as they outscored the Knicks’ bench by 39-14.
The internet reacts to New York Knicks fans booing Karl-Anthony Towns
With a poor run of results. it is clear that the Knicks fans are growing frustrated with their club’s drop in form and are at risk of dropping even further in the standings. As the video of the Knicks fans booing Towns went viral, the internet did not waste any time and expressed their opinions across social media.

Total team loss imo
More than well-deserved since the Cup Final

The beginning of the end for KAT here in NYC. Honestly, I really was rooting for him the entire time but humbly I don’t think he’s cut out to play basketball here in New York City.

I mean why didn’t they attack the paint when they were in the bonus before the suns were with 6 plus minutes left? Whatever, I just need them to win 5 of the last 6 this month all winnable games! Wake up Knicks let’s go!

Louder please

The Knicks have sucked for a month and mike brown has had no adjustments just keeps running out there with the same scheme on both sides of the ball

The boos are deserved. Team has lost its identity and desire. A season that started with hope is unraveling before our eyes in the most ugliest of ways

After this shot, legitimately the first time in a long time I turned off the tv with the game still going on 😔

While some blamed Towns for his lack of aggression and not stepping up in Brunson’s absence, some felt that head coach Mike Brown is to blame for their poor run of results due to his lack of adjustments.
Karl-Anthony Towns on their poor run of form
Over the course of the season, the Knicks have built a reputation for having a strong defense. But that defensive energy has been in the last few weeks. However, on Saturday, it was not their defense but their offense that cost them. As a team, they shot at just 40.2% from the field and 31.8% from the three-point line.
Following the loss, Karl-Anthony Towns was asked about his level of concern regarding the team’s recent struggles.

I don’t like losing any games, so of course my focus is on winning the next one. It’s about staying locked in on the task at hand, continuing to win games, and giving our fans something to cheer about.
Karl-Anthony Towns was asked what his level of concern is with the Knicks losing eight out of their last ten:

It is a matter of concern, as this season, many have predicted that the Knicks have a strong chance to make it out of the East. But right now, the Knicks are way closer to the play-in than the top of the East.
