The two weeklong ATP 500 events, the Barcelona Open and the BMW Open were concluded on Sunday (April 20). On the WTA Tour, Jelena Ostapenko beat Aryna Sabalenka to win the Stuttgart Open.

In Barcelona, Holger Rune denied Carlos Alcaraz his third title on home soil by ending his own trophy drought, lifting his first title since the 2023 BMW Open. In Munich on the other hand, home favorite Alexander Zverev prevailed over Ben Shelton to win his first title since the 2024 Paris Masters and his third title in the tournament.

Following the conclusion of these tournaments, the tennis world will shift its focus to the Madrid Open– the first combined Men’s and Women’s tournament on the clay swing. But for the WTA players, the Madrid Open marks the first tournament of the 1000 category.

For the ATP players, it will be their second Masters 1000 tournament, following the Monte Carlo Masters, which Alcaraz won for the first time in his career by beating Lorenzo Musetti. The Madrid Open is also the third combined Men’s and Women’s event of the 1000 category following the Indian Wells and the Miami Open.

This year’s tournament will mark the 23rd edition of the ATP Tour and the 16th of the WTA Tour. The qualifying rounds of both Men’s and Women’s events are underway on the outdoor clay courts of the Caja Magica in Park Manzanares.

Madrid Open 2025 schedule

The WTA main draw is scheduled to start on April 22, while the ATP Tour kicks off on the following day. Women’s final will be played on May 3, while Men’s will be concluded on May 4.

The tournament features top players, including Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and defending champion Andrey Rublev, among others. On the Women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Elena Rybakina will headline the event.

Last year in the Spanish capital, Rublev came from a set down to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final. In the Women’s final, Swiatek fended off three championship points to deny Sabalenka a three-peat and win her first title in the tournament. The Belaruain is the winner of two clay-court titles, winning both in Madrid.

Alcaraz will enter the tournament as a two-time champion, having won the title in 2022 and 2023. Zverev too lifted the title twice (in 2018 and 2021). Djokovic, on the other hand, is the winner of three Madrid Open titles. He has signed up for the tournament for the first time since 2022. The 24-time Grand Slam will chase his first Masters 1000 title since winning the 2023 Paris Masters.

The most successful champion in the tournament is Rafael Nadal, who has lifted five trophies. Nadal is also the winner of most matches in the event (56).

The tournament offers equal prize money to both the Women’s and Men’s competitors. The champion will receive $1,120,211, while the runner-up will get $595,763.

After the Madrid Open, the top players will be gearing up for another combined ATP and WTA event of the 1000 category. It’s the Italian Open, which will start in May. World No.1 Jannik Sinner will be making his comeback in Rome following his three-month doping ban.
