- Madrid Open 2026 will take place from April 21 to May 3 at Caja Magica in Madrid, Spain.
- Carlos Alcaraz will miss the tournament due to a wrist injury, while Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner are set to compete.
- The total prize pool for the tournament is approximately $9.7 million, with the winner receiving $1,188,102.
Madrid Open is the third combined WTA 1000 and ATP 1000 event of the season after the Indian Wells and the Miami Open. Both World No.1s, Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, will return to action.
But Carlos Alcaraz will not be playing. The Spaniard injured his wrist during the Barcelona Open, which forced him to hand the walkover to Tomas Machac in his second match. Alcaraz will be skipping the fourth Masters 1000 of the season for the second consecutive time.
This will be a good opportunity for Sinner to increase his lead in rankings over the seven-time Grand Slam champion. Sinner, who at present has 13,350 points in the live rankings, has no points to defend in Madrid because he was forced to skip the tournament last year due to his doping ban. Alcaraz has 12,960 points in the live rankings.
The Italian replaced him in the rankings table after defeating Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. Sinner is on a 22-match winning streak in Masters 1000s thanks to his wins at the 2025 Paris Masters, and this year’s Indian Wells, Miami Open, and the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Sabalenka comfortably sits at the top thanks to her victories at the Brisbane International, Indian Wells Masters, and the Miami Open. She also reached the final of the Australian Open but lost the title to Elena Rybakina.
The Belarusian will play the tournament as the defending champion. Last year, she defeated Coco Gauff, whom she also beat the last time she was seen in action, that is, in the final of this year’s Miami Open.

Apart from Sinner, Alexander Zverev will also headline the tournament. Casper Ruud will enter the event as the defending champion. Last year, he defeated Jack Draper. Novak Djokovic had initially signed up for the tournament, but an injury forced him to withdraw.
Iga Swiatek, the finalist in Madrid in 2023 and the champion in 2024, will be hoping to end her title drought in the tournament. The last time she won a title was at the 2025 Korea Open. The last time Coco Gauff won a title was at the 2025 Wuhan Open.
Elena Rybakina has already played two tournament finals this year. After defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the Australian Open final, she lost to her in the final of the Indian Wells. Sabalenka is a three-time champion in Miami. She won in 2021 by beating Ash Barty, then beat Swiatek in the 2023 final, before clinching the title last year against Gauff.
