Noah Lyles earned his first Olympic gold medal after crossing the finish line five-thousandths of a second before Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson. Thus, he became the ‘fastest man in the world’. Talk show host Maggie Gray disagreed though.
Sports radio host Maggie Gray argued on a technicality, stating that Lyles did not win by a large enough margin to claim the title of ‘fastest man in the world.’ Gray compared Lyles to Usain Bolt in terms of greatness and achievement.
There needs to be a little more humility when you win by five hundredth of a second.Maggie Gray said during her CBS talk show
Fellow host Andrew Bogusch offered a “win is a win” perspective, arguing that it didn’t matter if the victory was by five full seconds or five-thousandths of a second.
NBC announcer Leigh Diffey had initially announced Thompson as the winner before the official decision. According to Gray, many people thought the same.
Noah Lyles sparked another controversy last year. Not to call history cynical, but he called out NBA players on calling themselves ‘world champions’. He argued that the athletes like him who compete for the country were to be given such title. The statement had offended the players, and even fans.
Fans assemble in support of Noah Lyles
After Maggie Gray shared her criticism of Noah Lyles’ victory, fans came in thrashing her faster than 0.005 seconds. People called her out on her ‘stupidity’ and ‘delusion’. One user wrote, “the phenomenon of overwhelming American stupidity really ought to be studied“.
Another took to satire, stating if only they had a way of comparing him with the guy behind him.
Meanwhile, some saved their energy by responding to her rhetoric question with reassurance. “You absolutely can“, they said.
Some users bluntly pointed out that it was the silliest thing they had heard all day, while others included her opinion on their list of the top five worst opinions on the internet.
The comment section erupted in response to her criticism of Lyles’ victory, calling it “the simplest of concepts.” The reactions were a mix of disbelief and mockery. Despite the mixed opinions, it was clear that the internet largely disagreed with Gray’s criticism.
