Magomed Ankalaev remained one of the biggest names in the light heavyweight division until last year, as the undisputed champion. However, his reign ended after Alex Pereira defeated the Russian star to reclaim the title at UFC 320. Now, Ankalaev’s return has suffered another setback after UFC Abu Dhabi opponent Khalil Rountree Jr. withdrew because of an injury, forcing the UFC to find a replacement.
After suffering a submission loss to Paul Craig in his UFC debut, Ankalaev produced one of the division’s strongest turnarounds. The Russian contender compiled a 14-fight unbeaten streak, with 12 victories, 1 draw, and a no-contest against Johnny Walker at UFC 294. His run culminated at UFC 313, where Ankalaev outpointed Pereira by unanimous decision to capture the undisputed light heavyweight title.
However, Ankalaev’s title reign ended quickly after Pereira stopped him with a first-round knockout in their UFC 320 rematch. He was set to headline UFC Abu Dhabi against Khalil Rountree Jr., but the matchup collapsed after his opponent withdrew because of an undisclosed injury. Ankalaev later acknowledged the change in opponents, with the UFC booking Bogdan Guskov as his new opponent.
I was supposed to fight Khalil Rountree at UFC Abu Dhabi, but unfortunately he’s injured. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back soon. Now I’m fighting Bogdan. Like I’ve said before, I’ll fight anybody, anywhere, anytime. It doesn’t matter. I’m always ready.

The bout also marks Ankalaev’s first Octagon appearance since losing the light heavyweight title at UFC 320. Reports later revealed that he entered the rematch with a rib injury. Despite the setback, the former champion still competed and now returns looking to revive his title ambitions.
Many dismissed Ankalaev’s reported rib injury as an excuse after his UFC 320 defeat to ‘Poatan’. However, UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier later confirmed the Russian entered the rematch with a legitimate injury. DC still believed Pereira’s dominant performance would have produced the same result.
Talking about Rountree Jr, the former title challenger suffered a stoppage loss to Jiri Prochazka, halting his path back toward championship contention after earning another high-profile opportunity.
Guskov presents a dangerous challenge despite his majority draw against Jan Blachowicz at UFC 323. The Uzbek contender has gone the distance only twice in his professional career, finishing nearly every other opponent. His resume includes notable stoppage victories over Nikita Krylov and Ryan Spann.
Magomed Ankalaev now appears ready to embrace the challenge at UFC Abu Dhabi on July 25 against Bogdan Guskov. A convincing victory could strengthen his case for another light heavyweight title opportunity while the current champion, Carlos Ulberg, recovers from the injury sustained at UFC 327.
Brazilian star reveals why he turned down Magomed Ankalaev’s challenge at short notice for UFC Abu Dhabi
Paulo Costa has enjoyed a strong start since moving to the UFC light heavyweight division. The Brazilian defeated previously unbeaten Azamat Murzakanov by third-round knockout in his divisional debut at UFC 32. This immediately helped him break into the top 10 rankings and revived his title ambitions.
Since that victory, Costa has repeatedly campaigned for a top-ranked opponent or an immediate light heavyweight title opportunity. His push gained further attention after UFC commentator Joe Rogan suggested the Brazilian should eventually compete for the interim light heavyweight championship.

Costa has publicly criticized UFC brass, particularly CBO Hunter Campbell, over unfavorable matchmaking. After Khalil Rountree Jr. withdrew through injury, ‘Borrachina’ revealed he was offered Magomed Ankalaev on short notice. Costa ultimately declined the opportunity because of contract and financial concerns.
I don’t think they’re going to give me a proper fight if this is going to be my last one, unless I sign a new long-term deal. I want to finish this contract, or give me an offer. Give me a big offer. They’d rather not talk. They’d rather not come to the table. They’re in a weaker position right now because I’m coming off a great win, and nobody else is coming off a victory.

Had Paulo Costa accepted the offer, his clash with Magomed Ankalaev would have been one of the light heavyweight division’s biggest matchups. The Brazilian fan favorite’s aggressive striking and knockout power would have tested Ankalaev’s well-rounded offense and championship experience.
