Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets were dealt with a double blow on Monday night. For the first time this season, the Nuggets have lost back-to-back games. After beating the Miami Heat in their first meeting, they suffered a humiliating 147-123 defeat at the Kaseya Center. And to make matters worse, Jokic suffered a knee injury at the end of the first half after a dominant start to the game.

There have been very few players who have been as durable as Nikola Jokic. Since his ankle injury in 2017, Jokic has not missed five games in a row in any season. The least number of games he has played in a season is 69 games in the 2022-23 season, the season he won the NBA Championship.

It is hard to imagine that even after winning three league MVP awards in the last five years, Jokic has somehow managed to get even better. Till his unfortunate injury, the Nuggets center was having a historic campaign in which he was averaging 29.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 11 assists and had missed only one game so far. His performances over the last five years have led to several praises from NBA legends and players.

While Nuggets fans would have had their hearts in their mouths after his knee injury, they can breathe a huge sigh of relief as it has been reported that the Serb’s knee ligaments are intact. ESPN Senior Insider Shams Charania revealed that Jokic has been diagnosed with a hyperextension in his left knee and will miss at least four weeks.

The Nuggets need to hold fort till the return of their star player as they are currently placed at third in the Western Conference standings with a 22-10 record. It will be interesting to see how the others step up in Jokic’s absence, while teams right behind the Nuggets will see it as an opportunity to overtake them.

Fans react to Nikola Jokic’s injury update

After going down and grabbing his knee in pain, several fans would have feared the worst. But those fears have been put to rest now, and the fans were excited to receive the good news and expressed their happiness across social media.

Can Nikola Jokic still win the NBA MVP award?

In the last five seasons, Jokic has won three MVP awards and finished second in the rankings in the other two years. More than one-third into the 2026-26 campaign, Jokic was the frontrunner to claim his fourth MVP award, which would have put him in an elite list of players. Offensively, he has been one of the most entertaining players to watch, and his numbers have been extraordinary.

It remains to be seen how many games Jokic will miss before he returns. To be eligible for all regular-season awards, he has to feature in at least 65 games. Till now, it has been a battle between three players for the MVP – Jokic, reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic who is looking to win his first MVP title.

It is a tall task for the Nuggets to stay competitive in Jokic’s absence, who is the focal point of their offence. His teammate Jamal Murray, who knows a thing or two about knee injuries after missing an entire season due to an ACL tear in 2021, is having a career-best campaign this regular season and is expected to be selected as an NBA All-Star for the first time in his career.

The Canadian international will be expected to carry the offensive load till Jokic returns. Till then, SGA will have a good opportunity to build a strong case and overtake the Joker to win another NBA MVP title.
