It is impossible overstate just how badly Malik Beasley has ‘fumbled the bag’ this summer, so to speak. The former Pistons, Bucks, Lakers and Wolves 3-and-D guard finished the 2024-25 NBA regular season with the best performances of his career. Beasley was a crucial factor in the Pistons qualifying for the playoffs as the sixth seeds without going into the play-in tournament.
In the playoffs, the Pistons went six games against New York, but the nail was put in their coffin as Beasley fumbled the most crucial pass of the series. Had he caught the routine ball and made the open 3-pointer, the Pistons could have forced overtime and lived to fight another day in Game 6. But the ball went out of bounds and the Knicks knocked down the free throws after the sequence to ice the game and progress.
There were more plays from Malik Beasley that have come into light since it was revealed that the FBI and the NBA are investigating his possible involvement in gambling during the 2023-24 season, when he was on the Milwaukee Bucks. Many new facts have come to light about his financial situation, including the debts that he owes various establishments. This includes dentists and barbershops, among other places.
Bomani Jones went on his podcast ‘The Right Time’ to drop some reactions to the Malik Beasley situation. In his typical fashion, Jones was able to pithily and funnily contextualize the kinds of stupid debts that Beasley had run up in various cities:
How do you run up a $27,000 bill at the barbershop? If y’all from Milwaukee, tell me about what’s going on at Cairo Cuts. Cuz apparently they’re cutting the f*** out of their heads. And apparently a Minnesota dentist won a $34,390 default judgment against Beasley. The dentist started garnishing Beasley’s paychecks from the Pistons from February, court records show. Malik Beasley has made $60 million in the NBA, and my question from the garnishment is, who else is on his check if his dentist ain’t got his $35,000 yet.

Malik Beasley was in line to sign a 3-year, $42 million deal with the Detroit Pistons before news of the ongoing investigation
Not only does the federal investigation dig up Beasley’s past financial dealings, it could potentially have cost him a lifetime of NBA earnings. Beasley has made $60 million in NBA salaries so far and is definitely living up to the stereotype of a rich athlete thus far. But there are few things NBA front offices could’ve said when confronted with his tally of 319 made threes in 2024-25, only one behind league leader Anthony Edwards.

It was revealed by NBA reporters that Beasley was closing in on signing a 3-year, $42 million contract to return to the Pistons for the upcoming seasons. But with all of his legal troubles and unpaid dues, his chance to make 70% of his current lifetime earnings in three years have now disappeared up in smoke. Whether or not he beats the charges and comes out innocent, NBA teams will not offer him good money due to the optics.
This could go down as one of the all-time biggest bag fumbles in NBA history. The range of basketball salaries in today’s day and age allows even fringe starters to make $15-$20 million on an average during their prime years. If Beasley stays unsigned or signs for the veteran’s minimum next year, as is exceedingly likely, he may never recover financially from his indiscretions, alleged or real.
