Manchester City back to winning ways with a 5-2 win over Southampton
Manchester City recovered after their derby defeat last week with a 5-2 thumping of Southampton in the Premier league. The win helped them stay 14 points ahead of United at the top of the table.
A brace from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez and another goal from Ilkay Gundogan helped City register a big win over the 14th Southampton side. James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams scored for the Saints to add some respectability to the score-line.
City moved 14 points ahead at the top of the Premier League
De Bruyne opened the scoring for Manchester City in the 15th minute when he tapped in from close range after McCarthy denied Foden’s initial effort on goal. Southampton seemed to have received a huge boost when Laporte fouled Vestegaard in the City penalty box.
Ward-Prowse dispatched the resultant penalty down the middle to bring Southampton level. The match looked evenly poised going into the break but a superb curled effort from Mahrez gave City the lead five minutes from the break. Gundogan joined in on the act just before half-time, scoring from close range as De Bruyne’s effort deflected back from the post.
The 2 goals in the final 5 minutes of the half clearly lifted City’s performance in the second half and they enjoyed the lion share of possession. Mahrez made City’s dominance count as he fired in his 2nd goal in the 55th minute receiving a cut-back from Foden.
Che Adams pulled one back fro the hosts immediately in the next minute as City’s defense switched off after scoring. Just when the Saints looked to come back into the game De Bryune put it beyond their reach with a 5th City goal. Foden laid off on him just outside the box and he fired in into the bottom corner.
Guardiola rung in the changes towards the end of the game as he brought on Aguero, Ferran Torres and Mendy to give them some much needed game time. City now face Fulham next in the Premier league before their 2nd leg Champions league tie against Gladbach next week. The win meant Manchester City will need only 6 more wins to confirm the Premier league title this season.
