Manchester City took on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday night as both sides kicked off their respective Premier League campaigns. Despite having enough players to field more than four separate starting XIs, fans were surprised to see that Enzo Maresca did not start a single new signing out of the nine players they signed this transfer window. The defending Premier League champions got off to a winning start as Erling Haaland & Mateo Kovacic bagged the goals in a 2-0 victory.
Chelsea have struggled to get a result against Manchester City in recent times, with the Blues failing to win any of their last ten meetings. As City picked up their first three points of the season, fans were ecstatic to see Erling Haaland get off the mark. To add to their jubilation, the Norwegian opened his account while holding off Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.
It didn’t take long before fans dug up clips of the Spaniard mocking Haaland as Spain clinched victory in the Euro 2024 final. Cucurella was seen singing ‘Haaland trembles that I come‘ on several occasions as Spain celebrated their historic win.
It was only fitting that Haaland responded to the same with a goal in their first meeting since.

After Cucurella and Chelsea were forced to admit defeat in their Premier League opener, Haaland thought it was the right time to respond to the Spaniard. After grabbing his 91st goal in his last 100 games, Haaland was in no mood to let Cucurella off the hook. Speaking in a post-match interview, the Norwegian made it clear that he hadn’t forgotten the incidents that transpired during Spain’s trophy celebrations in July.

With 15 goals against the ‘big 6’ since 2022/23, no other player has more goals than the No.9 in the above-mentioned period. A fan commented that karma couldn’t have worked better with Cucurella after what he’d done.
Chelsea & Enzo Maresca in particular has a lot to figure out after failing to find a winning formula for his side in pre-season. To add insult to injury, Chelsea also conceded a screamer in the 84th minute, as Mateo Kovacic stunned the hosts from outside the area. 2-0 read the final score as Pep Guardiola‘s men got off to a running start.
