Manchester City eyeing Real Madrid’s €100 million worth midfielder as Rodri continues recovery

Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider has reported that Manchester City are displaying big interest to sign the Real Madrid defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. The City manager, Pep Guardiola, is a fan of the qualities of the Frenchman, and the club has funds to secure his signing. Their rivals Liverpool are also competing to secure the signing of the 24-year-old.
Madrid signed Tchouameni for a massive transfer fee of £85.3 million in the summer transfer window of 2022. Hence, there was big pressure on the Frenchman to deliver consistently at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, he has had a mixed tenure so far, and his recent performances have been inconsistent. This has raised doubts about his potential departure from the club.
The French midfielder has been a versatile player for the Los Blancos, as Carlo Ancelotti has used Tchouameni as a defender as well in recent matches. However, he was one of the big reasons why Real Madrid conceded five goals against Barcelona in the recent Super Copa de Espana final and lost the title. Fans have turned against him, and Ancelotti has also lost trust in the Frenchman.
Although his performances for Madrid have gone downhill, he still has quite a number of suitors in the transfer market. Manchester City and Liverpool are most interested in the former AS Monaco man. So, Madrid can still go on to sell him and recover some of the amount that they have invested in Tchouameni.
Why do Liverpool and Manchester City want Aurelien Tchouameni?
Liverpool wants to secure more options in the midfield region. Ryan Gravenberch has performed remarkably well under the new manager Arne Slot this season. However, the Reds are still looking into the transfer market for more profiles as they want to keep as many quality options available in their midfield.
Meanwhile, Manchester City’s performances have completely derailed since the injury to their crucial defensive midfielder, Rodri. Guardiola wants a player who can compete with Rodri for that position, and has turned his attention to Tchouameni. The report has also stated that City has reserved funds to spend on the Real Madrid star in the summer transfer window of 2025.
It clearly looks like Tchouameni’s future does not lie at Bernabeu after the upcoming summer transfer window. Given his declining performances and the heavy interest from the Premier League giants, Madrid will look to cash in on the Frenchman before offers for him turn dry.
