Premier League: Manchester City close in on £100m Jack Grealish
The current Premier League champions, Manchester City, have agreed to pay £100 million for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish in a deal that will be announced after the Euro 2020, reports Talksport. If successful, the deal will see City smash the current British transfer record of £94 million that was set by Manchester United when they bought Paul Pogba from Juventus.
As previously reported on FirstSportz, City are ready to break the record to bring in Jack Grealish. After a season that saw the Cityzens finish top of the Premier League and win the Carabao Cup, manager Pep Guardiola would be looking to go a step further and win the Champions League too. City were in the contention for an unprecedented quadruple of trophies till April this year, when they lost the FA Cup semifinals to Chelsea.
In recent seasons, Manchester City have been the team to beat in England: winning the league in three out of the past four seasons. However, they have endured disappointment after disappointment when it comes to European competitions, making the finals just once in the same time range.
After losing the finals to Chelsea last season, they have been heavily linked with England captain Harry Kane and his international teammate Jack Grealish. Fans of the club would be hoping for a Dias-like effect after the Portuguese was signed last summer and inspired the club to a domestic double.
Manchester City’s transfer window
So far, City have made no incoming transfers. In fact, they have seen Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia leave on free transfers for Catalan club FC Barcelona while captain Fernandinho’s contract extension is yet to be finalized. After going the whole of 2020/21 season without playing a recognised striker in most matches, City have been linked with several strikers so far.
These include Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Romelu Lukaku and Frankfurt forward Andre Silva. There have also been talks of unrest among the players, with Aymeric Laporte reportedly looking for a move to a big Spanish club, while Bernardo Silva too was linked to an Atletico Madrid move. It is expected that the signing of Jack Grealish would be followed by a big name departure due to the number of high profile players in the squad.
