Manchester City bid farewell to their hopes of another quadruple under Pep Guardiola on Wednesday night. A 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur courtesy of goals from Pape Matar Sarr and Timo Werner helped Ange Postecoglou‘s men earn progression. Despite the loss, what hurt City more was the fact that Savinho went out injured on a stretcher in tears.

Savinho signed for City ahead of the 2024/25 season on a £30.8 million fee and has been one of their best attacking players in recent games. The Brazilian was seen clutching his ankle in serious pain as many on social media speculate that he will not return to the pitch this season. Manager Pep Guardiola refrained from making any comments on the severity of his injury.

Manchester City suffered its first defeat of the season as they were eliminated from the EFL Cup on Wednesday. Even though the club is still in contention to win the treble, manager Pep Guardiola gave a blunt review of his side’s loss. Congratulations. I don’t like to lose, but it’s good news. These competitions are different.

Pep Guardiola told the press

City were without a significant chunk of their starters and fielded several youngsters and academy players against Tottenham Hotspur. A fan commented that Pep was delighted to see his side crash out of the competition for fear of risking even more injuries.

Guardiola claimed that if the first-team players aren’t available for the upcoming Premier League game against Bournemouth, he will not hesitate to field academy stars. City are currently top of the Premier League with a one-point lead over Liverpool.
