Manchester City sat atop the Premier League for a brief period as John Stones broke Wolves fans’ hearts in added time. City made the difficult journey to Molineux Stadium on Sunday night as the reigning champions were given a run for their money. Gary O’Neil and his men stood firm against a City side who needed 90 minutes plus added time to find the winner.

City were clearly on the back foot in the opening minutes, as Wolves capitalized in the seventh minute. Jorgen Strand Larsen tucked the ball past Ederson after a well-worked move left City’s backline exposed. Ederson then made a crucial save to keep City in the game, following which the momentum gradually shifted in City’s favor.

Thirty-three minutes in, Josko Gvardiol reinforced his reputation as a goal-scoring defender. The Croatian sent in a curler from outside the area to find the top right corner to make it 1-1.

After a long second half without goals, John Stones finally managed to steal all three points at the death. With just seconds to go, the Englishman leaped the highest to head home from a Phil Foden corner.

Pep Guardiola reacts to thrilling late victory over Wolves

Pep Guardiola etched his name in Manchester City‘s history once again as he broke his 2018 record! With the win against the Wolves, City has been unbeaten in their last 31 games in the Premier League. After the win, Guardiola spoke to the press as he went through the game and Stones’ last-minute winner.

We’re not used to it much like other teams that have this talent of winning games in the last minutes. Today, the flavor of winning this way is so nice.

However, opposition boss Gary O’Neil added controversy to the mix by suggesting a subconscious preference for Manchester City in crucial moments. Pointing to how City’s last-minute winner stood despite a lengthy VAR check, O’Neil said that officials wouldn’t intentionally act against Wolves.

However, the Englishman did suggest that City scoring a late winner might just be more important than a late goal for Wolves against West Ham. Even though Arsenal dropped points against Bournemouth, Liverpool winning 2-1 over Chelsea means that City remain second in the table.
