Manchester City have come under criticism for ‘breaking’ the law on quite a few occasions. From the alleged 115 charges to the profit and sustainability guidelines, almost every Premier League fan is aware of the fact that City have a lot of explaining to do in court.
Contrary to popular belief, the club recently won a case against the League in which it proved that its rules over Associated Party Transactions (APT) were unlawful. In an emphatic statement released by the club, it mentions that City have succeeded in establishing that two separate decisions by the League on the club’s sponsorship transactions have been ‘set aside’.
The above statement is derived from the decision made by a panel of judges at an arbitration tribunal. The Premier League stated that loans made by partner or subsidiary companies to clubs should be at or close to fair market value.
While UEFA has measures in place that necessitate loans at fair market value, City won the claim that permitting loans from one kind of subsidy and denying another (from shareholders) is discriminatory.
Fans react as Man City win appeal in court over Premier League
While several fans looked forward to Manchester City facing repercussions for breaking the law, the fact that the club ended up winning the appeal came as a pleasant surprise to the club’s fans. A Cityzen commented that they own this League and no club can stand in their way. Even though City came out on top this time, a rival fan didn’t lose hope. A few found solace in the face that this was just one instance and that the rest of the 115 charges will bring the club down.
Many even laughed at City’s official club statement that stated that the PL abused it’s ‘dominant position’. A few fans expressed their dissent at how the club’s ‘oil money’ helps them get away with so many wrongdoings. Fans stated that the 115 charges FC title is going nowhere, even if City are not found guilty of a single charge.
As of now, Man City are doing well in the League, and are just one point below League leaders Liverpool. Head coach Pep Guardiola and co. recently pulled off a 3-2 win over Fulham and will face Wolves after following the international break. City have scored the most goals in the League (17), and are one of the two sides that are still unbeaten.
