Manchester City are reportedly targeting Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, as a replacement for Pep Guardiola next summer. The 39-year-old manager, however, distanced himself from the rumors linking him to the reigning EPL champions.

Pep Guardiola has entered the final year of his contract, with many speculating that he could end his eight-year long association with Man City. Since joining in 2016, the Spaniard has led City to 18 major titles, including six EPL and one UCL title. With his future remaining undecided, reports have emerged of the club considering a move for Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese manager has enjoyed a brilliant time at the Lisbon side, having won two Primeira Liga titles, in 2021 and 2024.

These rumors have been fuelded by Sporting CP chief Hugo Viana’s decision to move to City, in order to take over as the new director of football. However, the Portuguese manager brushed aside the reports of him replacing Guardiola in 2025. He stated that he and Viana had separate paths, and the latter’s appointment does not mean he would join City. Moreover, he highlighted his professional relationship with Viana, while also adding that his situation at his current club remains unchanged.

Hugo Viana and I, we have different and separate paths. His appointment doesn’t mean that I’m going to Manchester City. We just have a very professional relationship… Nothing about Sporting has changed.

It remains to be seen what comes ahead for Amorim, whose contract at Sporting CP runs until 2026. Apart from the former Braga manager, Manchester City also have Girona manager Michel and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso on their list.

Italy legend takes a playful dig at Pep Guardiola, says he has ‘ruined football’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is often referred to as the ‘greatest football manager of all time’, owing to his innovative strategies and tactics. Ex-Italian forward Luca Toni, however, playfully exclaimed that the Spaniard might have ‘ruined football’ through his ideas.

In a recent meetup with Guardiola and Italian legend Roberto Baggio in Lombardy, Toni lightheartedly told the Man City boss that he had ruined the game, while also adding that he failed to find a team in his final few years because of the Spaniard’s tactic of playing a false nine. Moreover, Toni hilariously questioned the manager whether he even liked having center-forwards in his team.

Pep, you ruined football. With the false nine, I couldn’t find a team for four years.

Guardiola responded to Toni’s query by jokingly pointing to the success of Manchester City’s current number nine, Erling Haaland, who has scored more than 100 goals for his club. To this, Toni asked the City boss to stick to traditional center-forwards.
