Manchester United are not having the best of starts to the new season. Despite bringing in Leny Yoro to the club and extending Erik ten Hag‘s stay, the highly anticipated pre-season friendly against Arsenal ended in defeat for the Reds. 2-1 read the final score line as Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli secured the win for Mikel Arteta‘s Arsenal.

SoFi Stadium was witness to a late victory for the Gunners in a game which was dominated by Mikel Arteta‘s men. United fans were unimpressed with their side’s showing even though a moment of brilliance from Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for United. His solo effort was blasted through the legs of Karl Hein and into the back of the net.

The score remained level until the final ten minutes, when Martinelli ran through United’s back line before finding the bottom left corner past Andre Onana. Overall, fans were disappointed with United’s performance against the Gunners, with enough reasons to feel so.

Fans react to Manchester United’s second loss in pre-season

Any Manchester United fan will agree to the fact that no game against Arsenal is a friendly. Prior to the game, Erik ten Hag stated that the games they play aren’t ‘friendly’. His words came to bite him back as Arsenal ran off with the win in SoFi Stadium. A fan commented that despite making new signings and extending Ten Hag’s contract, United seemed to struggle with their same old problems.

Another added that Leny Yoro’s injury summed up the club’s fate and that they should accept their lack of good fortune. Rival fans mocked the Red Devils for their loss while Arsenal supporters praised their players for putting United in their ‘rightful’ place. A fan added that United could console themselves with the fact that they managed to win the penalty shootout that followed.

A lot of criticism came Andre Onana’s way, with fans blaming the keeper for letting in a late goal from an ‘easy’ shot in the final minutes. Some however, were unconvinced of the win and said that United will get the better of Arsenal when it matters the most. Up next, United take on Real Betis before facing Manchester City for the Community Shield.
