“Manchester United have to be a top-one team, not top-three”- Wayne Rooney contradicts to Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments about Manchester United
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney responded to former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo’s assessment of Manchester United to be a top-three team by saying that United should always try to be the top-one team. Cristiano Ronaldo in his recent interview said that a finish outside the top three would be considered a failure at Old Trafford, with Manchester United currently in seventh place and continue to struggle this season. Ronaldo also said that he is here to compete and win the Premier League however it does not seem the case as the Red Devils are 22 points off league leaders Manchester City at the halfway point of the season.
However Wayne Rooney in his recent press conference at Derby said that Manchester United have always been a top team and the club should always be competing for championships every single season and believes that the expectations of Cristiano Ronaldo are too low.
“Manchester United have to be a top-one team, not top-three,That’s the demands which the fans put on you, the demands that the club has.” Wayne Rooney said in his press conference.
The Manchester United’s all time record goalscorer also added that the team is going through a rough patch but the mentality should not change.
“Of course, they’re going through a difficult period but, make no mistake, that’s a club that has to be winning championships. It has to be winning trophies and that’s the pressure with coming and playing or working for Manchester United. In my eyes, I don’t accept that our mentality be less than to be in the top three in the Premier League.”
Can Cristiano Ronaldo lead Manchester United to a top four finish this season ?
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 14 goals in 21 games in all competitions this season. Manchester United have taken 13 points from the possible 18 under interim boss Ralf Rangnick after he took over last month as a result of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked after a string of poor results.
However the performances United have put in have not been the best and Ronaldo believes that with improvement the team and climb higher up the table.
“I don’t want to be here in a club to fight to be in sixth or seventh or fifth place, I’m here to try to win, to compete. I think we compete but we are not yet at our best level, Long way to improve and I believe if we change our mind, we can achieve big things.” Ronaldo said in his latest interview.
