After a season to forget in the 2023/24 campaign, Manchester United fans finally have something to smile about. The Red Devils picked up their first win of the season in emphatic fashion as they beat Fulham at Old Trafford with a late goal from new signing Joshua Zirkzee. The former Bayern Munich man scored in the 87th minute of the game, handing United all three points.
United struggled to take the lead till the final minutes, as Marco Silva‘s men stood firm between them and goal. However, Erik ten Hag showed just why he was the right man for the job when his tactical changes proved to be the difference between dropping points and claiming victory on the night. Substitutes Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho combined in the 87th minute, as the Dutchman guided a cross from the Argentine past Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.
A packed Old Trafford erupted in cheers as fans expressed their relief and jubilation in the stands. Supporters will surely be hoping for a better season compared to the last, where United finished at an all-time low of 8th position.
Despite his game-winning assist, Garnacho was made fun of for missing an open goal in injury time.
Erik ten Hag’s ‘only’ complaint following Premier League opener targets club’s strikers
United narrowly escaped disappointment in their season opener, as Erik ten Hag’s substitutes came to the rescue. Following the tense opener, the head coach spoke to the press as he outlined his concerns and areas for improvement. Even though the manager was happy that his men found their tempo from the start and kept the visitors pinned down, the lack of goals appeared to bother him.
We should have scored earlier and that is the only criticism of the team. He (Zirkzee) has more qualities and has to get the right balance.Erik ten Hag told the press via GOAL
Former Manchester United man Jaap Stam, however, was convinced that Ten Hag should leave the club after the disastrous results from last season. Amidst all the backlash and negative criticism, it will only be fitting if United finally live up to their billing as a top-four club. United take on Brighton on the 24th before hosting rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford a week later.
