Manchester United set new record alongside Liverpool as they smash Leeds United in 8 goal entertainer
Liverpool were the first team to concede and score 7 goals in the same season and now Manchester United have done similarly, but with six goals. Beaten by Tottenham at Old Trafford by 6 goals, Manchester United won against Leeds at Old Trafford by scoring two goals. Scott McTominay scoring the fastest two goals in Premier League history was simply the icing on the cake.
A win to regain home advantage
Going into this match, Manchester United didn’t have the best home form as they had lost three times in six games in the Premier League. Everything was put to rest however as Scott McTominay scored twice in a minute to give Manchester United a deserving lead over Leeds United. Marcelo Bielsa’s tactical formation for Leeds United meant that there was spaces to be exploited in the field. Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay took advantage of that and combined for the first goal brilliantly. The former laid off a pass to the latter and it was a goal via a powerful shot straight at the goalpost.
McTominay scored another one from a throw-in as Anthony Martial fed the ball to him. Illan Meslier was yet again beaten by McTominay and Manchester United led by two goals within three minutes of the game. Leeds United refused to give up and striker Patrick Bamford led the line for them and even had the ball in the net before it was given as offside. Bielsa refused to change his tactics and struck with it till the end of the match and Manchester United profited from the spaces in the middle.
In the 20th minute Fred fed Martial into the box and before the Frenchman could bring the ball under control, Luke Ayling put his foot forward and cleared the ball. However he didn’t do a real good job as Bruno Fernandes took the ball and smashed it home for the third goal of the evening. Victor Lindelof scored his first goal of the season as Martial set him up with a header at the far post. Leeds United ended the first half with a goal from Liam Cooper as he powered in a header from Rapinha’s corner.
Leeds missed a golden opportunity to halve the deficit when a beautiful cross was sent Raphinha’s way. His chance was saved by David De Gea in a point blank manner and Aaron Wan Bissaka cleared the ball. Daniel James put the match beyond reach for Leeds United when he pounced on a pass from Scott McTominay and nutmegged Meslier. Ironically, James is a target for Leeds and this could very well fast-track his move there.
Four minutes later Bruno got his second and Manchester United got their sixth as he scored from a penalty. Pascal Strujik struck his thigh out in the penalty box and convincingly Anthony Martial crashed against it and fell. A penalty was given and Fernandes converted it in his standard manner and killed the game for Leeds United. A consolation goal was scored by Stuart Dallas as he hit the ball into the top corner to get Leeds a second goal.
This rivalry was expected to be entertaining but not by these margins. This match was explosive from the start to finish as Manchester United took advantage of the pockets of space left by Leeds United. Eight goals were scored by both teams in a match that was played after 16 years. This was the first time Manchester United scored six goals since the era of Sir Alex Ferguson.
