Manchester United and Erik ten Hag are enduring the worst start to a League season in recent times. The Red Devils were up against West Ham United in the Premier League as United aimed to pick up their fourth win of the season. However, things went from bad to worse for the club, who suffered a 2-1 defeat at London Stadium.

United started the game on the front foot, although poor finishing and a lack of passing in the final third prevented them from taking the lead. The biggest miss of the game came from Diogo Dalot, who managed to beat the keeper but failed to place the ball into an empty net. The entire crowd let out a gasp of relief as the Portuguese spurned a golden chance for the Red Devils.

West Ham took the lead in the 74th minute, when Crysencio Summerville got on the end of a Danny Ings mishit. United were given a lifeline when Casemiro headed home from point blank range for his first goal of the season.

Just when United were on course to salvage a point, the referee awarded a penalty to the hosts. Matthijs de Ligt could only protest in disbelief as Jarrod Bowen converted the penalty kick.

Erik ten Hag names 2-1 loss as ‘unfair and unjust’

Even though poor finishing cost Manchester United a clear win against West Ham, manager Erik ten Hag stated that his side didn’t deserve to lose. The loss meant that United have now dropped to 14th spot and that they only have 11 points from their first nine games! Despite the result, Ten Hag blamed the officiating and VAR as they awarded a penalty to the hosts.

West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui conveniently avoided controversy by claiming that he did not see what transpired in the penalty area. On the other hand, Ten Hag made sure to express his dissent. The Dutchman began his protest by stating that VAR is only allowed to interfere in ‘clear and obvious mistakes’.

This is the third time I’ve felt injustice in the season and it has a big impact on where we are on the table. It’s not right.

United play their next game against Leicester City in the EFL Cup before hosting Chelsea at Old Trafford. Following the loss, pressure on the manager has mounted even more. It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will be able to keep his position in the coming weeks.
