Full-back Marc Cucurella dumped his boots in the bin after an erratic first-half display during Chelsea’s 4-3 victory against London rivals Tottenham. The Spaniard slipped twice in the first ten minutes of the match, resulting in the Blues conceding two quick-fire goals. Tottenham took an early 2-0 lead into the match. For the Blues, Cucurella was at fault as he made two costly errors.

Firstly in the sixth minute, he slipped with the ball and lost his balance to fall to the ground. Dominic Solanke capitalized on the opportunity to dispossess him and score the opener. He once again stumbled in the 11th minute, allowing Dejan Kulusevki to score the second goal. He immediately rushed towards the dugout to change his boots on the sidelines, while discarding his old pair in disgust.

Cucurella had slipped twice and the team needed a comeback to win the match. Despite the club now remaining just four points behind league leaders Liverpool, Enzo Maresca suggested that his side would not win the title this season by referring to Cucurella’s incident.

Arsenal, City and Liverpool probably don’t slide… like Marc Cucurella did! To be serious, we are not ready, we are far from these teams.

Enzo Maresca has made such Premier League title admissions several times in the past as well. He had previously cited the inexperience in his young squad as a key factor undermining Chelsea’s title aspirations. It remains to be seen if his players can sprung a surprise and somehow win the Premier League.
