Former Packers tight-end Marcedes Lewis believes the team broke up the veteran roster far earlier than they should have.

Homecoming might be in the books for veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis. The star tight end has been in the NFL since 2006, and the 2025-26 season will be his final year as a professional athlete. However, Lewis is a free agent. He played the last season on a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears, but the team has not offered to extend him for one more season.
Before playing for Chicago, Lewis spent five seasons playing for the franchise’s sworn enemy, the Green Bay Packers. Lewis played alongside Aaron Rodgers until the quarterback departed from Lambeau. Now that Lewis is a free agent once again, the tight end was asked about the possibility of him reuniting with Matt LaFleur in Green Bay.
Interestingly, the tight end admitted on the Up & Adams Show that he FaceTimed with Matt LaFleur last week.
It’s funny that you say that, I know that, that last year I was there, they were close to bringing me back for another year before I signed with Chicago. The direction they were going was going to be young…Matt (LaFleur) is one of my best friends, he FaceTimed me last week, we were kind of talking about it. It’s really out of his hands… I understand the business side of the things…it’s not necessarily personal…
Lewis said, ruling out the possibility of his final year being spent as a Packer. The tight end’s response suggests that in 2023, the team was confident in moving ahead with Jordan Love as their next quarterback. They no longer wanted to retain Aaron Rodgers. It was time for a new chapter in the Packers’ history book.
Marcedes Lewis feels the Packers rushed into rearranging their roster
So far, Green Bay’s decision seems to have been a wise one. Love has led the Packers to a Divisional Round appearance in his two seasons as the team’s starter. The team has yet to reach the Super Bowl, but it will not be a challenge considering the young roster they have assembled.
Green Bay is grooming the talent at its disposal and ensuring that these players develop chemistry as they grow so that it can yield the desired results.

Despite the team’s success with the younger generation, Lewis believes the Packers got rid of the veterans earlier than anticipated.
It’s just one of those things, I feel like it ended a little too soon in Green Bay. Obviously, guys were leaving, A-Rod left…you know it was just guys were leaving from that team…so it was just a lot going on.

It all began with Davante Adams‘ decision to move to the Raiders. Once his top receiver was gone, Rodgers began to contemplate his own future. The Jets moved heaven and earth to ensure the four-time MVP got what he needed to join them. Despite their best efforts, the Rodgers-Jets bond did not take off.
The quarterback’s future is uncertain. While the rumors of him potentially joining the Pittsburgh Steelers gain traction on one end, there is no communication suggesting that such an understanding is official.
As for tight end Marcedes Lewis, he will be a 41-year-old tight end seeking one last trip in the NFL. Despite his age, Lewis has not missed a single game over the last two seasons. Durability will not be an issue with him, the man has missed only 18 games in 19 years. The right team seeking veteran guidance will give him the shot he is seeking shortly.
