Marcos Giron has been working with former World No. 1 Andre Agassi since 2020 and their relationship has proven very beneficial for the 30-year-old American. He has been playing the best tennis of his career since their partnership began and recently clinched his maiden ATP Tour title.
At the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, Giron beat the likes of Benoit Paire, Alex Bolt, and Christopher Eubanks to set up a title clash with Alex Michelsen. In the final, he came back from a set down, saved a match point at 4-5, 30/40 in the third set and won 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-5.
Reflecting on his association with Agassi, Giron praised his compatriot for his knowledge of the sport and said that he was honored to be able to turn to him in his time of need.
Andre is an unreal guy, I would say he’s the nicest guy I’ve ever met. His knowledge is unbelievable, so it’s always very special to have him around me. He’s someone I looked up to growing up, so it’s an amazing feeling. I know today that he’s an even better person than I could have ever imagined.Marcos Giron said during his on-court interview (H/T: puntodebreak)
The California native also said that their partnership happened out of the blue and disclosed that he once received “epic” advice from Andre Agassi.
Our relationship came out of nowhere, that’s the truth. I met him in San Diego four years ago. Later that year, Sebastian Korda went to Las Vegas to work with him, so he started looking for some guys to accompany him and hit the ball together. I spent a few days there, we talked a bit and it was an incredible experience. He gave me some advice at the time that was epic for me.Marcos Giron added
The American reached his first two ATP finals recently — two years ago in San Diego and earlier this season in Dallas. While he had to settle for runner-up finishes on both occasions, he is now a tour-level champion thanks to his Newport triumph.
Marcos Giron expresses his delight on winning his maiden ATP title
Marcos Giron has not had an easy time on the ATP tour in recent years. Having undergone right hip surgery in December 2015 and then left hip surgery in February 2016, it looked like he was destined to finish his career without a title to his name.
However, Giron dug deep against Alex Michelsen in the Newport final and beat the 19-year-old in two hours and 37 minutes to record his best result on the men’s tour to date. Speaking after the win, he expressed delight at winning the title and thanked everyone who supported him over the years.
Better late than never. We'll take it! There are so many people I can thank and couldn't be more lucky to have them in my life. Family, coaches, friends. For this, it's really special for me but also for all their help and support though the years.Marcos Giron said
With the win, the 30-year-old has risen to a career-high World No. 38 in the ATP Live Rankings charts.
