Emma Raducanu is gearing up for the Indian Wells Open where she will be meeting Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in the first set. Raducanu once again will be searching for her first WTA title since her historic 2021 US Open win.

Since her fairy tale run at Flushing Meadows, poor form and her mid-match retirement due to injury problems have derailed her career. The World No.55, however, has pocketed massive paychecks thanks to her sponsorship deals with big brands.

Raducanu recently encountered another stalker during the Dubai Open and it negatively affected her career as she nearly pulled out of the Indian Wells. Amidst her poor run of him and incidents involving stalkers, if Raducanu ends up deciding to quit tennis, tennis broadcaster Marcus Buckland urged her not to.

I think it’s really tough for her and I hope she doesn’t come to the conclusion that she doesn’t need tennis. Of course, if she gave up tennis tomorrow, she has earned enough from the sport not to worry about money and she could pursue other areas she is interested in. She has mentioned a banking career.

Emma Raducanu breaks silence on scary stalking incident

Emma Raducanu addressed the stalking incident for the first time ahead of her Indian Wells first-round match. Raducanu was up against Karolina Muchova during the second round in Dubai when she spotted the stalker and suffered a panic attack. She “could barely breathe” and hid behind the umpire’s chair.

That man had approached her twice before that match off-court and engaged in behavior that was distressing to the Brit. He was banned from future tournaments and was also given a restraining order. The 22-year-old was later seen crying after seeing her family upon landing in London and could have withdrawn from Indian Wells but decided not to.

The allure of Indian Wells was a big part of me coming. I wasn’t sure if I was going to come and compete so soon. I just wanted to make sure I was ready but since coming here I have surprised myself with how happy I feel here.

Emma Raducanu told reporters

It was the second stalking incident following her encounter with Amrit Magar, who walked 37 kilometers to meet Raducanu and stole her father Ion Raducanu‘s shoe as a souvenir in 2022. He was given a five-year restraining order along with 200 hours of unpaid work.
