Marcus Smart was integral to the Boston Celtics before leaving the team last season. Recently, he appeared on the Run Your Race podcast, reacting to his former team winning the NBA championship. Contrary to popular belief, Smart holds no grudges or ill will toward the Celtics, congratulating them on their well-deserved win.
Smart spent nine years with the Celtics and led them to the 2022 NBA Finals. He praised his former teammates, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum on the podcast. Smart acknowledged the hard work and dedication that led to their championship victory. Despite being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies last year, Smart remains proud of his time with the Celtics and remained happy to see his friends succeed.
I know everyone is expecting me to be salty and sh-t... There’s no hard feelings from me. It’s definitely a bittersweet feeling. It’s definitely tough because I was in the trenches with them. Smart’s new team, the Grizzlies, didn’t fare as well last season. Their key player, Ja Morant, missed the majority of the games due to a suspension and a season-ending injury. In the upcoming season, Smart remains positive and focused on his new mission.
Marcus Smart aims to prove his worth alongside Ja Morant and help the Grizzlies become a formidable team in the title race. The guard admitted that it was a tough pill to swallow not to win the title with the Boston Celtics. As such, his focus remains on winning the championship with the Grizzlies.
Memphis Grizzlies have no interest in trading Marcus Smart
The Memphis Grizzlies have no plans to trade Marcus Smart, according to Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer. Despite being active on the trade market, the team is not interested in parting ways with the former Defensive Player of the Year. Marcus Smart, who was acquired in a three-team trade last offseason, showed promise with averages of 14.5 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.1 steals per game.
The Grizzlies are, however, looking to make moves in the 2024 NBA draft. Additionally, Kelly Iko of The Athletic reports that Houston Rockets GM Rafael Stone and head coach Ime Udoka are fans of Smart, but a trade with Houston would not involve Smart.
Memphis is open to trading up or down in the draft, but Smart appears to be a key piece in their plans moving forward. With his defensive prowess and offensive potential, Smart could remain a valuable asset for the Grizzlies as they look to build a competitive team around him.
