Aaron Glenn‘s decision to bench Justin Fields for Tyrod Taylor in the loss against the Carolina Panthers did not come as a surprise. Initially, it seemed that Glenn was protecting Fields from further harm after taking a big hit while sliding down near the end of the second quarter.
Despite receiving a clean chit from the independent physician, Fields remained seated in the Jets’ dugout for the rest of the game.
For the second straight game, the 26-year-old recorded below 50 passing yards. He threw just 46 yards from 6 completions in the first quarter before colliding with a Panthers defender.
Taylor’s presence injected a slight spark into the tie, but that was down to the two interceptions. The Jets dropped to their seventh straight defeat and are the only team without a win in 2025.
Fields’ numbers paint a bleak picture of the journeyman quarterback. In six games since signing for the Jets, he has thrown 86 completions for 845 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Justin Fields is not a starting QB in the NFL. He is not good enough to be a starting quarterback.
Marcus Spears said during a recent segment of ESPN’s NFL Live
According to the retired NFL defensive end, Fields shows “explosiveness with his legs at times; he has those one-off, two-off games at Pittsburgh last year.” However, the current iteration of Justin Fields at the Jets “has shown up at every stop, and I think it’s time to move on from the fact that he can be a starter.“

Fields played six games for the Pittsburgh Steelers last year. He had 1100+ yards, 10 overall touchdowns, and just 1 interception from six starts before the Steelers front office decided to bench him in favor of veteran Russell Wilson.
The Steelers qualified for the playoffs but faltered at the first hurdle. When the season ended, Fields and the Steelers went their separate ways despite sources citing that the AFC side wanted to bring their former quarterback for one more year.
Aaron Glenn remains non-committal about Justin Fields’ future as the Jets’ starting quarterback
There are still 10 games left in the season, but the Jets find themselves in quarterback purgatory. Despite comparing Fields to Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts a few days before the Panthers fixture, Glenn is facing difficulties choosing who he will choose as the starting quarterback for the week 8 showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Speaking with reporters on Monday, Glenn requested a bit more time to reveal his starter’s name.
That’s something I want to continue to look at. It’s early on Monday, so I said this yesterday, there’s a lot of thought that goes into that for me, personally, and then being able to get with the staff, and then being able to ask other coaches that have been in this situation how they handled that.
Aaron Glenn said (H/T: Sports Illustrated)
In Fields’ defense, the Jets’ offensive line has struggled to protect him all year. He is the second most sacked player (sacked 22 times), behind the Tennessee Titans’ rookie Cam Ward (sacked 30 times).
Regardless of how it may look, Fields’s future as the Jets starter is uncertain. Taylor’s 15 years of experience in the league may come in handy in the remaining games.
