Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, who is currently not a part of the team’s ongoing T20I series against South Africa, is hopeful of making a return to the national team setup. Stoinis has already retired from ODIs, but still feels that he has a lot of T20 cricket left in him.

Having made his debut for Australia in 2015, Marcus Stoinis has been a consistent presence in the team’s white-ball squads. The 35-year-old all-rounder’s record in 71 ODIs includes 1,495 runs, with one century and six fifties, along with 48 wickets. Despite these somewhat modest ODI numbers, Stoinis has been an impactful player in T20Is, scoring 1,245 runs and taking 45 wickets across 74 matches.

A fast-bowling all-rounder and lower-order batter, Stoinis played a crucial role in Australia’s victorious campaigns at the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. His retirement from the 50-over format was both abrupt and surprising, as he stepped away from ODIs just before the 2025 Champions Trophy, despite being selected for the squad. Now, his future in T20Is is also uncertain, having not played a match since November 2024.

Marcus Stoinis was left out of Australia’s recent T20I series, including a clean sweep victory against the West Indies last month and the ongoing home series against South Africa. Despite these omissions, the 35-year-old remains optimistic about his future. In a recent interview with ESPN, he expressed his desire to make a comeback, with his ultimate goal being a place in the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The all-rounder confirmed his availability for future Australian T20I selections and provided details about his prior discussions with national team head coach Andrew McDonald and Cricket Australia’s chief selector George Bailey concerning his international future.

While currently playing for the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, Stoinis disclosed that he had talked about signing his £200,000 contract with the franchise league after being left out of recent Australian T20I squads. He told ESPNCricinfo:

The nature of it is that you can’t select yourself in an Australian jersey, but you can sign a contract to come and play in the Hundred. When this opportunity came up, I spoke to Cricket Australia, I spoke to Ron [Andrew McDonald] and we made a plan around that.

Marcus Stoinis further emphasized that he is not finished yet and believes he has a lot of T20 cricket ahead of him. The 35-year-old expressed his hope of being selected for the upcoming series against New Zealand and India, even after missing two consecutive series. He acknowledged, however, that the final decision is not within his control and rests with McDonald and Bailey, whom he has great relations with.

You share a few messages after the games and have a laugh… They say playing for your country should be the best time of your life, and for me it has been. But I don’t feel like it’s done yet.

Despite his absence from the national team, Marcus Stoinis has maintained a busy career, remaining a highly sought-after player in T20 leagues around the, including the IPL, MLC, and SA20. Meanwhile, in the Australian squad, his spot has been filled by 23-year-old all-rounder such as Mitchell Owen.

He made history by becoming the first player in The Hundred to take two wickets without conceding a single run in an innings. The 35-year-old bowled a remarkable five-ball spell from the 66th to the 70th delivery of the Northern Superchargers’ innings, where he did not give away a single run. During this spell, he claimed the wickets of Harry Brook and Imad Wasim of two consecutive balls, finishing with 2/0.

His brilliant bowling spell played a key role in restricting the Superchargers to a modest first innings total of just 124 runs. Trent successfully chased down this target with four balls to spare, with Stoinis hitting a four on the 96th ball to score the winning runs.
