The match at Wimbledon on July 4th between America’s 13th seed Taylor Fritz and unseeded Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech was not without any drama. Fritz’s compatriot Mardy Fish, a former tennis player, liked what ensued after the second-round match and expressed it on X.

When Rinderknech got to know about his second-round opponent, he tried to pull Fritz’s legs by reminding him of their 2023 French Open second-round match. Fritz complained about the behavior of the crowd who were showing their full support to the home favorite Rinderknech, though he ended up losing the match by a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 scoreline. The World No.76, before the second round, took a sarcastic dig at Fritz by saying that the American wouldn’t ‘cry’ while playing in the calm atmosphere at Wimbledon.

My friend Taylor! The atmosphere will be calmer, and he will cry a little less this time, I think. I have nothing against him, but if he expected the French crowd to give him kisses between points, he was in the wrong place. He beat me, bravo to him.
Arthur Rinderknech said at the press conference

Fritz, who once again beat the Frenchman 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, told him to “have a nice flight home.” And Fish, who is a three-time major quarterfinalist, seemed to like this banter between these players and showed full support to Fritz by writing on X: “I’ve never been more proud.”

The 2023 French Open and the 2024 Wimbledon Open are the only two times they met on the ATP Tour. Before losing to Fritz, Rinderknech beat former World No. 4 Kei Nishikori in five sets.

After his win over Arthur Rinderknech, Taylor Fritz made sure to make the French crowd know how annoyed he was because of their continuous boos and jeers during the match. He said the crowd’s behavior motivated him to win the match at any cost.

The crowd was so great cheering for me, I wanted to make sure I won.
Taylor Fritz said after his win

Fritz will next face Alejandro Tabilo in the next round on July 6th. The American met Tabilo twice on the ATP Tour in Houston and ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells, winning both matches in straight sets. Fritz’s best performance at Wimbledon came in 2022 when he reached the quarterfinals.
