Alcaraz was nervous at the start and lost his serve in the first game. But with Nadal, a two-time Olympic gold medalist by his side, the current Roland Garros champion settled down. They won a crucial tiebreak in the first set. In the second set, they broke serve in the ninth game, and Nadal finished the match with Alcaraz hitting a volley winner.

Nadal, who is 38 years old, has not said if the Olympics will be his last event. However, many think it might be due to his recent injuries. He wore tape on his right thigh during the match and has doubts over competing in the men’s singles draw.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion’s Olympic journey started with a surprise as he was a torchbearer at the opening ceremony the night before. On the other hand, Alcaraz was in action earlier on Saturday as he opened his Olympic singles campaign with a straight-set win over Lebanon’s Hady Habib.
