While most of the WNBA was busy talking about the ‘dirty’ foul on Caitlin Clark, Marina Mabrey and the rest of the league had to go about their business of winning games.

The controversy surrounding the Indiana Fever and the Phoenix Mercury dominated headlines and also placed an unwanted spotlight on the league.

Fans were demanding that the top brass clean up this mess, as this was not what basketball was supposed to look like. They want to watch players do what they do best, and that is to play to the best of their abilities.

Marina Mabrey decided to answer that call. The 29-year-old was one of the million-dollar players this season and has performed up to those expectations so far.

When the Toronto Tempo lost Brittany Sykes to a leg injury during their last game against the Fever, it was going to pile the pressure on her backcourt mate.

The Notre Dame alum started the game against the Los Angeles Sparks hot. She scored 19 points in the first quarter alone. This season, she has performed similarly on two other occasions, but none resulted in this.

Mabrey did not let her foot off the gas and continued to score at will. Then, with 2:52 left in the fourth quarter, she nailed a three-pointer. That was her 53rd point, tying the league single-game scoring record.

Fans applaud Marina Mabrey after record-tying night

As soon as clips of this feat started making their way in between all the angry posts against the WNBA, fans started to realize Marina Mabrey had given them a reason to enjoy basketball again.

After watching the clips and then the game highlights, they came back to applaud the New Jersey native for making it a night to remember. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Many did question why she did not go for the record, as she just needed a point. But after putting up 28 field goal attempts, 18 of which were threes, and 12 free throw attempts, Marina Mabrey was exhausted.

On head coach Sandy Brondello‘s insistence, she went back in. But after two failed three-pointers, she decided that was it. Either way, it was an achievement.

She now has her name attached to the highest-scoring games in both WNBA and Unrivaled history after her 45-point explosion in Philadelphia this year.

Yeah, I guess Marina deserves a ride in the RR.

Angel Reese wrote on X

This was Angel Reese letting her former Chicago Sky teammate know that she had just won a deserved ride in her newly acquired Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Mabrey accepted the gift, which means that come August 10th, there is a chance she and Reese could post a video about their ride in the latter’s $500,000 SUV. It might mean something for the Tempo star, as no other player in the WNBA has a vehicle this luxurious.
