It seems the Seattle Mariners are finally ready to make some moves for the 2025 season. The team on Tuesday announced that they have landed utility player Miles Mastrobuoni from the Chicago Cubs in a trade deal.
Instead of receiving a player in return, the Cubs got some cash considerations in exchange for Mastrobuoni. To add him to the 40-player roster, the Mariners would designated for assignment (DFA) catcher Nick Raposo. He was one of the players who was added to the team to complete the 40-man roster while being claimed from the waivers.
This move of Mastrobuoni comes a day after the Mariners agreed on a one-year $3.5 million deal for Donovan Solano. To clear a spot for him on the roster, the team would DFA left hander Austin Kitchen.
Mastrobuoni was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016 as a 14th round pick. It was six years later in 2022 where he would make his major league debut.
After spending one year at the high level with the Rays, he joined the Chicago Cubs. In this three seasons so far, the 29-year-old has been a part-timer. In his 272 plate appearances in his career, he has a slash line of .219/.279/.263 (.542 OPS).
During this time, he has managed to hit just one home run and has eight doubles and nine RBIs across 119 games. He though has stolen 16 bases in 17 attempts.

Fans unpleased with Mariners adding Miles Mastrobuoni to team
In the space of two days, the Seattle Mariners have made two transactions. The fans on social media though are extremely unpleased with the moves of Donovan Solano and Miles Mastrobuoni.
Fans on X pointed out the stats of Mastrobuoni and questioned his addition to the roster. Some angry fans urged them the management to sell the team. Meanwhile one fan, who was among those displeased with this roster move, blasted the organization and wrote, “What a pathetic team“.

Last season, the Mariners went 85-77 and finished second in their division, 3.5 games behind the Houston Astros. However, the Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers both finished 86-76, one game ahead of the Mariners and missed out on the playoffs once again.
