The first big free agent signing of the 2025 offseason is here. On Monday, the Seattle Mariners officially announced re-signing 1st baseman Josh Naylor on a 5-year, $92.5 million deal.

After reaching the 30-home run mark for the first time in his career in 2024, Naylor was traded away by the Cleveland Guardians. The AL Central side traded him to the Arizona Diamondbacks as he entered the final year of his deal.

The Mariners were one team that wanted to get their hands on him after the 2024 offseason. After spending around 7 months in Arizona, Naylor was traded to the Mariners in July 2025 in exchange for top prospects LHP Brandyn Garcia and RHP Ashton Izzi.

The 28-year-old had a successful 3-month stint with the Mariners following the trade. In the 54 games, he batted with a .299 average, hit 9 home runs and had 33 RBIs.

His team broke a 24-year drought for the AL West title as they toppled the Houston Astros in the final weeks to win the division. After beating the Detroit Tigers in a 15-inning marathon Game 5 of the American League Division Series (ALDS), the Marines reached their first American League Championship Series (ALCS) since 2001.

In the ALCS, the M’s found themselves 2-0 up. After a fightback from the Toronto Blue Jays, they won Game 5 and went 3-2 up, one win away from their maiden World Series trip. Unfortunately for them, the Blue Jays came back to win Games 6 and 7 and eliminated them from the ALCS.

Naylor had a slash line of .340/.392/.574 in 12 postseason games for the Marines with 3 home runs and 5 RBIs. Despite the best efforts from him and the others, the Mariners suffered another postseason heartbreak.

As the team aims to challenge for the title again next year, they are bringing Naylor back. The 2024 All-Star was the No.1 priority for the team. His 5-year, $92.5 million deal is the biggest free agent deal the team has offered to any player since president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto took over after the 2015 season.

As per reports, Naylor has a full no-trade clause from this contract. There are also no deferrals.

Social media reacts to Mariners signing Josh Naylor on $92.5 million deal

Many users on X argued that this deal was “too cheap” as many expected his free agency to cost over $100 million at least. One user wrote, “Seems like a bargain“, while reacting to this development.

Check out that and some other reactions from X below:

With the first base problem now solved, the Mariners must now address the situation regarding the problems at 2nd base and 3rd base. Both Jorge Polanco and Eugenio Suarez have also become free agents. While they have internal options for 2nd base, the 3rd base is something that would need some fixing from the outside.

In a statement released by him, Naylor expressed that he was “excited” to return to Seattle. He expressed gratitude towards the team and the fans.

I’m going to be a Mariner again and I couldn’t be more excited… Seattle has the best fanbase in baseball. They’re electric and support us through and through, and I couldn’t be more thankful for that. I can’t wait to continue to play with these guys and bring the city a championship.

Josh Naylor said in a statement

Following their Game 7 loss in the ALCS, the Seattle-based side is the only current team in MLB who have never played in the World Series. Naylor and his teammates would be hoping to break this and hope to do one better in the 2026 season.
