When politics gripped the country earlier this year, many NBA personnel, such as Mark Cuban, Patrick Beverley, LeBron James, and others, were caught facing flak for their views. This time, they have been brought together after the death of Charlie Kirk.

The conservative activist was at Utah Valley University to kick off his “The American Comeback Tour.” Kirk held a ‘prove me wrong’ open table, where he encouraged the audience to ask him questions about his opinions.

Approximately 3000 students attended the show, with many asking some hard-hitting questions. While he was replying to a student, a video clip captured a bullet piercing through the activist’s neck.

Blood was gushing out of his left side as his body tilted. Several publications speculate that a sniper rifle may have shot Kirk at 12:20 local time. Utah Valley students ducked and then clamored for safety.

So far, the FBI has arrested a suspect but released him after questioning for hours. The hunt is on for Charlie Kirk’s shooter, as he leaves behind his widow, Erika Frantzve, and their two children.

Kirk was a popular activist, especially among the younger generation. He was instrumental in helping students and young adults bring forth their voices. His efforts helped the Republicans successfully return to power.

This news shocked the country, with President Donald Trump being the first to confirm Kirk’s death. Soon after, tributes poured in as the country grappled with the idea that a political assassination had taken place.

Leading up to the Presidential elections, politics caused division not just among common folk, but also seeped into sports with many athletes tilting towards one side. Most of the NBA leaned towards the left, with Mark Cuban being one of the most prominent voices.

A host of players, including LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and others, supported Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. They wanted her to be the next President and stop Trump from coming back into power.

This time, however, many of those same voices came forward to pay tributes to Charlie Kirk and offer prayers for his family despite his controversial opinions regarding the NBA. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Most of them had a similar story to tell. Senseless violence like this has no place in the country. Even if this killing has not yet been confirmed as a political assassination, they ask if there was a need to leave a family shattered.

NBA players and owners were divided in their political affiliations

Except for Mark Cuban, most of the NBA franchise owners leaned towards Donald Trump and the Republican Party campaign during the past Presidential elections.

His partners in the Dallas Mavericks, the Adelson family, turned out to be one of the largest contributors to Trump’s campaign fund. They were joined by the Houston Rockets’ Tillman Fertitta, who ended up becoming the US Ambassador to Italy.

New York Knicks owner James Dolan also reiterated his affiliation with the Republican Party when he allowed Madison Square Garden to be used during the campaign.

On the other hand, players and coaches have displayed their interest in supporting the left. LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Steve Kerr, and several others vocally supported Kamala Harris and denounced the right wing’s campaign policies.
