Mark DeRosa claimed that his previous comments regarding the USA already having a place in the quarterfinals were a result of him being overconfident.

Mark DeRosa and Team USA will take on Canada in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic. Ahead of this game, the USA manager hit out at the “false narratives” regarding him following a huge qualification mistake.
The United States started the campaign with a huge 15-5 win over Brazil. They would follow this up with a 9-1 win over Great Britain. Despite falling behind on the first pitch through a lead-off home run from Nate Eaton, DeRosa’s team walked out as comfortable winners again.
Their third game saw them take on Mexico. They had not beaten their North American rivals in this competition since 2006.
An intense game would see them emerge as 5-3 winners and snap a 3-game losing run against Mexico in the WBC. With this win, USA were 3-0 in the WBC and were nearly through to the knockout stages.
Before their clash against Italy, DeRosa would appear on MLB Network. The 51-year-old, who also works as an analyst for them, would make a huge mistake. In the interview, he claimed that his side had already punched their ticket for the next round.
"It's weird. We want to win this game, even though our ticket's punched to the quarterfinals."

This however, was not the case. Despite a positive record, the Americans were not through just yet.
They would then suffer a massive defeat, not in terms of the scoreline, but in terms of morale as Italy took them down 8-6. This win saw the European nation improve their record to 3-0 and set up a huge game against Mexico.
Had Team Mexico defeated them by scoring 5 or fewer runs, they would have qualified with them and eliminated the United States in the process. Fortunately for DeRosa and his team, Italy emerged as 9-1 winners and knocked out Mexico.
With the US now set to take on Canada, DeRosa was asked to clarify his mistake. The former MLB star claimed that he was simply overconfident and knew about the qualification scenarios, in contrast to what the critics had been saying regarding him.
It’s just an overly confident statement on Hot Stove. Period. The end. And it’s my fault. There’s a couple false narratives out there, but no, I was well aware that we had to win that game, based on all the scenarios that could take place.
Mark DeRosa told the reporters
"I think there's a couple false narratives out there, but no, I was well aware that we had to win that game based on all the scenarios that could take place."

The game against Italy saw DeRosa make several changes to the lineup. Stars like Cal Raleigh, Bryce Harper, Alex Bregman, and Brice Turang were some big names that did not start this game. The U.S. manager had previously claimed that he “misread” the calculations.
Mark DeRosa slips up again while clarifying previous comments
Mark DeRosa found himself under heat from the fans following a major slip in an interview before the showdown against Italy. It seems he had another slip-up while clarifying these comments on Thursday.

In the press conference, DeRosa would mention that both teams, Italy and the USA, went 2-0 in the contest. The error from him here is that the United States were 3-0 going into the game against Team Italy.
They went in 2-0. We went in 2-0. We knew they were playing Mexico the next day. We knew there was tiebreaker rules involved.
Mark DeRosa told the reporters
“There’s a couple false narratives out there. I was well aware that we had to win that game based on all the scenarios. They went in 2-0. We went in 2-0.”

These words from him have once again raised the eyebrows of the fans on social media. Many have started to doubt about his ability to coach Team USA in such an intense tournament.
Mark DeRosa reveals receiving message from Olympic hero Jack Hughes before showdown against Canada
USA and Canada will once again face off in a sporting event. Ahead of the WBC quarterfinal clash between these two countries, manager Mark DeRosa revealed that the team received a message from Olympic hero Jack Hughes.

The New Jersey Devils star etched his name in American sports history with an overtime winner against Canada in the Winter Olympics gold medal game. Hughes goal saw Team USA claim their first Olympic gold medal in men’s ice hockey since 1980.
Since this moment, DeRosa and his team have been fired up. Before the WBC, Team captain Aaron Judge revealed that their group chat was spammed with photos and quotes of Hughes.
In the press conference on Friday, DeRosa revealed that the 24-year-old had sent them a message.
Jack Hughes sent the boys a nice little fire-up message that I put out on their group chat.
Mark DeRosa said
"Jack Hughes sent the boys a nice little fire-up message."

USA, who won the event in 2017, fell short on the final hurdle in 2023. In the final game, they would lose 3-2 to Team Japan with captain Mike Trout striking out against opposition captain Shohei Ohtani.
Speaking of the quarterfinals of the WBC, South Korea will face the Dominican Republic. On the other side of the bracket, Puerto Rico will take on Italy while the defending champions, Japan, lock horns with Venezuela.
