Team USA Mark DeRosa is facing the heat from the fans following a major blunder. Before the game against Italy, he claimed that his side had already qualified for the quarterfinals. Following their 8-6 loss against them, he admitted his mistake.

The USA had started strong in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) this year. The runners-up of the 2023 edition began their 2026 campaign with a 15-5 victory over Brazil.

This was followed by a 9-1 triumph over Great Britain. They had fallen down 1-0 in this game on the very first pitch as Tarik Skubal gave up a lead-off home run to Nate Eaton.

Monday saw the United States extend their record to 3-0 with a victory over Mexico. Following a dominant performance from the mound from Paul Skenes, USA edged out the North American country 5-3 and claimed their first victory over them since 2006.

With that win, the Americans had a strong grip on qualification to the next stage. A victory over Italy would have seen them finish with a 4-0 record and win the group.

Ahead of the matchup, Mark DeRosa appeared on the MLB Network. During this, he accidentally claimed that his team had booked their place in the next round.

Ton of respect for Italy. It’s weird. We want to win this game, even though our ticket’s punched to the quarterfinals.

Mark DeRosa said

This is where DeRosa was wrong. Despite the strong record of Team USA, they were not officially qualified yet.

The former MLB star would go on to make several changes. Stars like Cal Raleigh, Bryce Harper, Alex Bregman, and Brice Turang were those who did not start.

DeRosa and his team ended up suffering a major loss against Italy. The European nation would take down one of the heavy favorites 8-6.

With this loss, the USA are in a bit of trouble. If things do not go their way on Wednesday, they could be eliminated from the group stage.

Speaking with the reporters after the game, DeRosa admitted his mistake and claimed that he “misspoke” and misread the calculations.

Yeah, I misspoke. I was on Hot Stove with a couple of buddies today and completely misread the calculations.

The big question now is, did DeRosa actually misread the situation and thus make all the changes to the lineup? Only he can answer this.

The 51-year-old admitted that he made a mistake regarding the qualification scenario for Team USA and the others. On X, several users called for his job with one writing, “should be fired tonight.

Here is that and some reactions from X below:

With a 3-1 record, the USA now needs things to work out in their favor to qualify for the quarterfinals. The United States have never been eliminated from the group stages in the WBC and will be praying for this run to continue.

What is the qualification scenario for Mark DeRosa and Team USA after loss against Italy?

Mark DeRosa and Team USA could end up getting eliminated from the group stage of the World Baseball Classic after their 8-6 loss against Italy. What is the qualification scenario for them, though?

The first one is pretty simple. As long as Italy win against Mexico, they go through too, albeit as the runners-up of Pool B. Things get tricky if Mexico wins the showdown against Italy on Wednesday.

A win for Mexico would see the three teams finish with a 3-1 record. A tiebreaker would then be needed to separate the teams.

Without going into extreme mathematical details, Team USA will qualify along with Mexico if the latter wins by scoring 6 or more runs. If Mexico wins by scoring 5 or fewer runs, then they qualify along with Italy. In such a situation, the USA will be knocked out.

So, DeRosa and the rest of America would be hoping either for a Mexico win by a huge margin or simply a loss for them.
