Andy Murray’s former coach reveals what he ‘didn’t really like’ about Emma Raducanu’s tennis at Australian Open

Emma Raducanu once again had a forgetful campaign at a Grand Slam event. At the 2025 Australian Open, the 2021 US Open champion was expected to make a deep run, and though she made it to the third round for the first time in the tournament, she could win just one game against Iga Swiatek.
Swiatek, who made it to the semifinal, clinched the first set 6-1 versus Raducanu, before registering a bagel in the second set. Andy Murray‘s former coach Mark Petchey has often expressed his support to Raducanu but this time, he explained what went wrong.
Petchey wants Raducanu to improve her serve as he thinks if a player loses confidence in serve, then it may become ‘sort of terminal’. He also urged Raducanu to learn some lessons from her defeat to the Pole.
Petchey advised her to do those things again that made her a Grand Slam champion at Flushing Meadows. After her Australian Open exit, the 22-year-old parted ways with Nick Cavaday as the British coach wanted to prioritize his health. To work on her fitness, Raducanu has hired Yutaka Nakamura, who has worked with Grand Slam champions, Maria Sharapova and Naomi Osaka.
Emma Raducanu to play at the qualifying rounds of Abu Dhabi Open
Following the Australian Open, Emma Raducanu signed up for the Singapore Open and faced Cristina Bucsa in the first round. Raducanu had to fight hard to clinch the first set but couldn’t overcome the 27-year-old Spaniard, losing with a scoreline of 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.
Raducanu is next set to play the qualifying rounds at the Abu Dhabi Open after accepting the wild card. She will be playing a qualifying draw for the first time since the 2021 US Open. Last year in the tournament, she reached the fourth round but was defeated by 2nd seed Ons Jabeur.
Raducanu, last year, stirred debate when she chose not to play the qualifying rounds of the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open before the US Open. In New York City, after her three-set defeat in the first round, a dejected Raducanu claimed she would be playing more tennis in 2025. She wanted to start the season at ASB Classic but a foot niggle forced her to withdraw from it.
