Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schroder has been handed a three-game suspension without pay following his off-court altercation with Luka Doncic. The incident took place on December 28 when the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Kings at the Crypto.com Arena. The two guards were going at each other throughout the game and shared some heated moments on the court.

Many did not read too much into it after the match, as it appeared that the issues had been resolved and dusted. ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed that the NBA was suspending Denis Schroder for three games for trying to hit the Slovenian star. The suspension news was mocked by Schroder as his suspension led him to miss the game against the Houston Rockets and also the rematch against the Lakers on Sunday night.

The heated exchange between the two started when Luka Doncic reportedly taunted Schroder over his decision not to accept an $84 million contract offer from the Lakers back in 2021. Over the last few seasons, the Lakers guard has established himself as one of the best trash talkers in the league and has does not back away from a fight.

The Kings avenged their defeat as they recorded a convincing 124-112 win over the Lakers at the Golden 1 Center on Sunday. While Schroder was suspended for his second game, Doncic put in an impressive effort, scoring a game-high 42 points to go along with seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Doncic leads the league in scoring with 33.6 points per game so far this season.

Doncic’s former teammate Markieff Morris, who has been involved in a few confrontations himself, revealed additional details about what unfolded behind the scenes on his “The Morris Code Show”.

When I got the call, they said, ‘Cuz put hands on him.’ I don’t put that past Schroder. He put hands on him and the ni**as had to grab Schroder. That would have never happened if a ni**a like me was on that team. From what I was told, they said big fella Ayton grabbed Schroder and pulled him to the side.

ESPN reported after the game that the German went after Doncic, forcing other players and security to intervene. While the former Dallas Mavericks guard drove away with his father in his car, Schroder was led by security to the Kings’ team bus.

Luka Doncic-Dennis Schroder beef grounded in international basketball

The two guards have history outside of the NBA as well. Schroder represents Germany while Doncic plays for Slovenia in Europe. The two locked horns in September 2025 when Schroder’s Germany sent Doncic and Slovenia packing in the quarterfinals of the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 in Latvia.

Morris said that this heated exchange between the two was not just about what happened on the court during their clash, but has to do with international basketball. He went on to add

Schroder knows some s**t about Luka that we don’t know. You know how that overseas basketball is. He knows some s**t because they’re always doing this. This and everyday thing when they’re going at it.

It is no secret that rivalries are taken very seriously in Euro basketball. Maybe there is more to the Doncic-Schroder beef that meets the eye; however, physical altercations are unacceptable and deserve to have consequences.

Germany went on to win the championship, beating Turkey in the final, and Schroder was awarded the EuroBasket MVP title.

Paul Pierce had a few words to share about the altercation

It was Doncic who taunted Schroder for not signing the contract extension with the Lakers which brought out a reaction from the German. It was a disappointing moment in Schroder’s career as he expected to bag a bigger deal in free agency. He ended up signing $5.9 million deal with the Boston Celtics.

On the No Fouls Given show, former NBA star Paul Pierce weighed in on the incident and understood Schroder’s reaction.

He went at him about his paper; that’s a sensitive subject. That’s like messing with somebody, girl, when you talk about his paper like that especially when you lose the money you had a chance to sign a contract. He called you pretty much a dummy for not taking that contract. Luka wrote a check his a** couldn’t cash.

Unfortunately for Schroder, he was not able to play in their win over the Lakers and handing Doncic and co. their third consecutive loss. He will miss their next match against the New York Knicks on Wednesday as well.
