Miami Marlins is set to hire Los Angeles Dodgers’ first base coach, Clayton McCullough, as per multiple reports. The team is making new changes for 2025 in order to get more competitive for the October games. 

McCullough will be named the 17th manager of the franchise history after recording his 10th year with the Dodgers association. He also got to add a World Series Championship ring to his resume as LA won the Fall Classic this year.

On Wednesday at the GM meeting, Marlins President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix told MLB Network Insider Jon Paul Morosi that they are nearing a decision on the manager’s position. Clayton McCullough will be replacing ex-manager Skip Schumaker.

Schumaker completed his tenure with the Miami Marlins on September 29 and was hired by the Texas Rangers as a senior advisor. He’ll be working alongside president of baseball operations Chris Young as per reports.

McCullough served as a minor league field coordinator for six years before acting as the first base coach for the LA Dodgers for the past four seasons. He also worked with the Toronto Blue Jays for seven seasons.

Although this will be Clayton McCullough’s first stint in the big leagues as a manager, he has added records to his resume to support his contract. He won the Florida State League Manager of the Year and Northwest League Manager of the Year awards.

As part of the Dodgers, Clayton McCullough played a crucial role in Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts development. Betts even called him his “favorite coach ever” after the 2023 Home Run Derby.

However, fans have mixed reactions to McCullough’s hiring. Some congratulated him, “Good luck to him, we are going to miss him in LA,” while some added, “Going from the most expensive org to the cheapest good luck to him as a Marlins fan.”

Before setting foot in behind-the-scenes baseball operations, McCullough played in the Minor League for four seasons in Cleveland. He was selected as the catcher out of East Carolina University during the 2002 MLB Draft pick in the 22nd round.
