In Short
  • Marshawn Lynch expressed frustration over Bill Belichick not being voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
  • Belichick fell short by ten votes despite his six Super Bowl championships as a head coach.
  • Current Patriots coach Mike Vrabel remains confident that Belichick will eventually be inducted.

Rivalries in the NFL can be very fierce when the Championship is on the line. But at the same time, rivals recognize greatness in others. Marshawn Lynch knows a thing or two about greatness. The ‘Beast Mode’ terrorized the opposing defenses back in the day, yet even he knows that one individual cast a bigger shadow than anyone for more than two decades. And it’s none other than Bill Belichick.

The entire country witnessed chaos in January when Belichick fell a few votes short of entering the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Lynch faced Belichick’s New England Patriots on a few occasions, and in fact, he won his only championship ring by defeating the Boston franchise in the Super Bowl.

During a recent episode of the Get Got podcast, Lynch didn’t hold back when the topic of Bill Belichick and the Hall of Fame came up. The retired running back vented his frustration in his unique, colorful way against the voting committee and the process for leaving Belichick out of Canton.

Marshawn Lynch wants to see Bill Belichick in the Hall of Fame

Lynch raised a good point: if six Super Bowls as a head coach (eight in total) don’t make Belichick eligible for the Hall of Fame, then what more does he have to accomplish? It is an important question raised by several of Belichick’s former players, as well as by players from rival teams like Eli Manning.

Belichick needed ten more votes to be part of an illustrious group of people, immortalized by fellow football efficiandos. One of the first names to step forward and confess to not voting for Belichick was Vahe Gregorian of the Kansas City Star. Gregorian picked Ken AndersonRoger Craig, and L.C. Greenwood over Belichick as their eligibility was coming to an end. He explained:

I felt more compelled by what I perceive to be last chances and looming lost causes within the system as we have it.

Retired NFL legend and head coach of the University of Colorado football team, Deion Sanders, urged the committee to dissolve the voting process and allow athletes who are in the HOF to decide the next inductees.

That said, Belichick’s entry to the HOF should be viewed as a delay rather than a denial. History will not recognize him as a first ballot HOF, but he’s bound to wear the Golden Jacket at some point in the future. Patriots’ current head coach Mike Vrabel said in a press conference before Super Bowl LX:

I’m confident Bill will get in. I don’t know the process; I know that everybody’s talking about the process. And however the vote needs to go, I know Bill is a Hall of Fame coach.

The Patriots hired Belichick as head coach around the turn of the century. He remained with the Patriots until 2023, when a 4-13 season marked the end of his tenure. Belichick went 266-121-0 during that time, or about .687. Toward the back end of 2024, the University of North Carolina hired him as the Tar Heels’ head coach. In his first season, UNC finished 4-8.
