Marta Kostyuk faced Linda Noskova in her maiden Wimbledon semifinal on Thursday (July 9). Ahead of the match, the Ukrainian made an amusing reference to Rafael Nadal as she glanced up at the ceiling.
Kostyuk asked, “Is this where Rafa hit his head?” A member of the tournament staff replied that the incident had actually taken place at Court No. 1, while Kostyuk and Noskova were preparing to play on Centre Court.
The staff member added that she had been there when it happened and initially thought Nadal might knock himself out. Kostyuk then wondered whether he had suffered a concussion, to which the staff member replied that he had only ended up with a headache.

At Wimbledon 2017, Rafael Nadal suffered a comical mishap while preparing to walk onto the court for his fourth-round match. After bending down to tie his shoelaces, the two-time champion sprang back up, only to bang his head on the doorframe. Nadal and his opponent, Gilles Muller, burst into laughter over the incident before the match, which the Spaniard ultimately lost in five sets.
Although Wimbledon was never Nadal’s most successful Grand Slam, his legacy at the All England Club remains extraordinary. He won the tournament twice, capturing the title in 2008 and 2010. His 2008 triumph is widely regarded as one of the greatest victories in tennis history, as he ended five-time defending champion Roger Federer‘s reign with an epic five-set win in the final. Nadal returned to lift the trophy again in 2010, defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets in the final.
Linda Noskova defeats Marta Kostyuk in straight sets
Linda Noskova overcame No. 12 seed Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-4, in 1 hour and 19 minutes to reach her maiden Grand Slam final. Noskova was almost untouchable on serve throughout the match. She faced just one breakpoint, the lone blemish on an otherwise flawless serving display, at 3-1 in the second set.

Meanwhile, she ruthlessly exploited Kostyuk’s lapses whenever the finish line was in sight, breaking serve three times, including when the Ukrainian was serving to stay in both sets. Although Kostyuk struck 22 winners to Noskova’s seven, she also committed more unforced errors, finishing with 22 compared to Noskova’s 17.
At age 21, Noskova is the youngest women’s singles finalist at Wimbledon since Eugenie Bouchard in 2014. A title win would make her the youngest Wimbledon champion since compatriot Petra Kvitova in 2011.
Noskova will next face Karolina Muchova in the first all-Czech Grand Slam final. It will also be the first women’s singles Grand Slam final between two players from the same country since Sloane Stephens defeated Madison Keys at the 2017 US Open and the first such Wimbledon final since Serena and Venus Williams met in 2009.
