Marta Kostyuk had a funny reaction after hitting one of the strangest aces ever seen. The 24th seed at the Madrid Open had beaten Emma Raducanu in the last round. She is facing Veronika Kudermetova. Kostyuk made a strong start, breaking early and moving ahead with a strange serve.

During one of the games, Kostyuk hit a serve that looked like a lob. It flew high in the air and seemed like it would miss. But it dropped perfectly inside the service box for an ace. Both players stood still, shocked by what happened. Kostyuk smiled awkwardly and said sorry as she went 3-0 up.

After a tough match against Raducanu, Kostyuk found her rhythm early this time. She broke Kudermetova’s serve after a long game to lead 2-0. On game point, her wild serve dropped steeply and bounced away, leaving Kudermetova no chance to touch it.

Both players laughed and paused after the crazy shot. Kostyuk raised her hands in apology before sitting down at the changeover. She kept her momentum going and won the first set 6-0 in just over 30 minutes.

Emma was hitting the ball very hard on the warm-up so I think I just over-stretched it on the body and it just got progressively worse. But I don’t think it’s anything bad, it was just a very weird pain. I usually never have problems with my wrist or anything. I’ll probably fix it for the next match but it was weird.

Although she lost the second set, Kostyuk came back strong to win 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. She later said she felt some discomfort during her warm-up. Despite the issue, she is having her best run ever in Madrid.

As a seeded player, Kostyuk got a bye straight into the second round. This is the first time she has reached the third round at the Madrid Open. She had pulled out of the Stuttgart tournament recently, where she was a finalist last year.

Kostyuk lost ranking points after missing Stuttgart, but she looks back in form now. At the Caja Magica, she is just one win away from reaching the last 16.
