News of players being dissatisfied with the way club management treats them is not a new development. Time and again, players have to stand their ground against being ‘mistreated’ or made use of by their employers. However, former FC Barcelona man and Danish international Martin Braithwaite seemingly had enough of the same after he was sold by former club Espanyol.
In a turn of events fitting to be included in a movie, the player has supposedly made plans to buy his former employer! Braithwaite played for RCD Espanyol in the second division from 2022 to 2024, making 70 appearances and scoring 32 goals as they gained promotion back to the top flight. He eventually joined Gremio on a free transfer after running down his contract with the Spanish side.
As per reports, the former FC Barcelona man was unhappy with the way the club prevented him from joining a top division team. Espanyol is owned by Chinese businessman Chen Yansheng.
While many feel skeptical about the takeover, it must be understood that Braithwaite is extremely wealthy. The player’s earnings come not only from football, but also a real estate empire that focuses on providing affordable housing for the black community.
Fans react to Martin Braithwaite reportedly looking to buy out Espanyol
Several fans expressed their shock as Martin Braithwaite started making moves to buy out his former employer. While a few were still confused as to where the funds were coming from, others were in disbelief of how he came to such a conclusion. A fan laughed at the same, claiming that this was an unseen level of pettiness from the Danish striker.
Being a former Barcelona player, a few joked that he could have easily helped Barcelona out of their financial constraints. The striker played 58 games for the club, scoring on ten occasions. A Barca fan joked that he was always welcome to purchase them as well. Aged just 33, a fan labeled him as one of the smartest players in the game, even though his performances on the pitch haven’t always been top notch.
It isn’t difficult to see how the player will proceed to fire the entire management if the deal eventually materializes. That being said, his current stay at Gremio is yet to start. He is most likely to play his first game for the club in the Copa do Brasil against Corinthians. The club are currently 14th in Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A and will need quite a bit of luck to finish in the upper half. Gremio has also been home to former FC Barcelona star Luis Suarez.
