Olympique Marseille forward Mason Greenwood, who experienced a tough start to his footballing career, matched Didier Drogba‘s record at the French outfit. The ex-Manchester United outcast has scored 13 goals in his first 20 Ligue 1 appearances for the club.

Mason Greenwood struggled in the early stages of his career after he was accused by his partner of s*xual assault and coercive behavior, causing bodily harm. He was arrested on those charges in January 2022. The cases were later dropped in February 2023 after key witnesses withdrew. Despite having returned to playing, Manchester United opted not to reintegrate him back into the squad.

The 23-year-old was subsequently loaned out to La Liga outfit Getafe last season. He went on to flourish in the Spanish league, scoring ten goals and providing six assists in 36 appearances. After a much-successful loan spell, Greenwood found new suitors this season. He joined Roberto de Zerbi-managed Marseille on a lucrative transfer deal worth €30 million.

Since arriving in France, Greenwood has been on fire. He has scored 14 goals and provided three assists in just 23 appearances in all competitions. It also pleases him in the second position on the Ligue 1 goal-scoring charts. Greenwood’s exploits have also helped him keep pace with Marseille great Didier Drogba, who scored 13 goals in his first 20 Ligue 1 appearances before going on to play for Chelsea.

Greenwood’s goal-scoring exploits have helped Marseille take up the second position on the French league table. Moreover, the 23-year-old forward is now on the verge of switching his national allegiance from England to Jamaica.

Marseille head coach Roberto de Zerbi expressed his frustration with club forward Mason Greenwood following his recent display in a 2-0 win over Angers. The manager vented out his annoyance at the forward’s poor abilities during corners.

Greenwood has scored 13 goals in 21 Ligue 1 appearances this season and has adjusted to life in France rather well. Despite being in red-hot form, manager Roberto de Zerbi criticized his performance. He exclaimed that the 23-year-old is not good during corners and urged him to be good at it.

Greenwood is not a specialist on corners. He could become one, but he is focused on the goal. When he goes to take a corner, he goes a bit like… And that annoys me.

Nonetheless, the England international has already scored three goals and provided two assists in six matches since the turn of the new year. His last goal came against Lyon in a 3-2 victory for Marseille in the French league.
