Dallas Stars’ forward Mason Marchment finds himself under the wrath of NHL fans following his actions in Game 3 against the Winnipeg Jets. The forward star would tap the referee with his stick while venting his frustrations during the game.
The third game of this series between the Stars and Jets saw Marchment take a few hits. However, match referee Graham Skilliter did not pay much attention to his claims and did not issue any penalties in his favor.
One of the plays saw Marchment get tipped by Mark Scheifele while being on a breakaway. With a non-penalty call from the official, the Stars’ forward was slow to get up to his feet.
When he started walking off the ice, he was seen shouting in the direction of the referee. While doing so, he slightly touched the official on the shin with his stick. Check out a video regarding that below:
Mason Marchment just tapped an official (Graham Skilliter) on the shin pad because he was upset with a non-call.

You definitely can’t do that and I imagine some sort of discipline is coming. pic.twitter.com/fVchFshpJg
The referee, meanwhile, did not react to this incident at all. As per NHL rules, intentionally sticking an official results in a 5-minute major penalty and could also led to an ejection from the game.
After the game, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman informed that league had discussed what happened at the end of the second period. It is the on-ice officials call to decide whether an incident is an Abuse of officials violations. Since referee Skilliter decided no-penalty, there will not be any further actions on Marchment.

League has discussed incident at end of second period between Mason Marchment and referee Graham Skilliter.
It is on-ice officials' call to decide if that qualifies as an Abuse of Officials violation. The answer was no…so no further action

— Jake (@RimJutherford69) May 12, 2025
I’m not saying suspend the guy but you gotta give him at minimum a fine, otherwise it’s setting a dangerous precedent.
— Jeff Stevenson (@CWHLJeff) May 12, 2025
Weak. 10 games minimum.
— DKJ (@DKJBarry1) May 12, 2025

— 🍄 DPG 🍄 (@DadPlaysGamesX) May 12, 2025
And when he does it again, he will have no prior history so the cycle repeats itself…
— Zaak Jiwa MD (@ZaakJiwa) May 12, 2025
so we can just whack refs now when we don’t agree with a call? LMFAOOOOO
— Justin 🫶🇨🇦 (@Justin_L_99) May 12, 2025
If scheifele did that, it would’ve been a match penalty and 10 game suspension 😂😂
— Kyle Allenby (@allenby1995) May 12, 2025
Throw the rulebook out the window at this point
— Justin (@Justingerri) May 12, 2025
The NHL needs to introduce a whiny bi*ch clause and if you are classified as such then you are eligible for a suspension cause that’s what Marchment is
— Father of 3 (@whiter069) May 12, 2025
So the league reinvents the rules on goals via kicking and then decide what's abuse of an official (which this clearly was)

So what are rules for if we can all remake them to fit our own narrative??
With no action against Marchment, he will be allowed to participate in Game 4 without any penalties and fines.
Ex-NHL goalie rips Mason Marchment for slashing referee in Game 3
Several hockey fans were left upset with Mason Marchment’s action in Game 3 against the Winnipeg Jets. A former NHL goalie went on to rip the Dallas Stars‘ player while discussing his slash on the on-ice referee.

As the panel of Sportsnet discussed this hit from Marchment, former New York Islanders goaltender Kelly Hrudey expressed that one cannot hit the referee under circumstances.
You can’t make contact with an official under any circumstances. You can be as frustrated as humanly possible, but you can’t contact them.
Kelly Hrudey said
Another former NHL star, Kevin Bieksa, would then recall any incident in which one of his former teammates was handed a 10-game suspension for whacking the official. If the referee had taken any action on the ice, Marchment could have faced more trouble later on.
