It’s that time of the year again. On Thursday, the 90th Masters Tournament will kick off at the Augusta National Golf Club (ANGC) in Georgia and kick start the 2026 major championship season.

Being held annually since 1934, the Masters Tournament is one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in the history of golf. Once again, some of the biggest names in this sport will take to the field and battle it out to land the coveted green jacket.

This year, a total of 91 golfers will tee off on Thursday. This includes a mix of professional golfers and top amateurs. A total of 22 players will make their first appearance in this major championship.

Some of the notable absentees are Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. While Woods has stepped away from the sport and is seeking treatment following his recent car crash and DUI arrest, Mickelson is away due to some personal family health matter. This marks the first time since 1994 that this iconic event will have neither of them in the playing field.

Before the tournament gets underway on Thursday, the traditional Par 3 contest will be held on Wednesday. This event is a massive hit among golfers as they take part with their families, acting as caddies in a short, nine-hole layout.

Let’s delve a bit deeper and find out how to watch the first major of the 2026 season.

Masters Tournament 2026 Prize Money

The Masters Tournament is one of the biggest tournaments in golf history. So a marquee event like this also features a huge prize pool.

Last year, the event had a purse of $21 million. This saw the winner, Rory McIlroy, make $4.2 million. The Northern Irish golfer not only got the green jacket and completed the career grand slam, but he also earned a whopping cheque as a reward for his victory.

This year, the purse is expected to be in a similar range. As of now, the amount has not been disclosed yet.

In recent years, the purse has increased. In 2023, Jon Rahm took $3.2 million from the $18 million purse. A year later, Scottie Scheffler earned $3.6 million from the $20 million pool.

The biggest question now is, who will take home the biggest share and wear the green jacket on Sunday? If McIlroy were to go back-to-back, he would become just the third player after Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods to win two successive Masters titles.
