UFC Rio main event was nearly jeopardized after Rafael Fiziev withdrew with a few weeks remaining due to an unfortunate injury. With less than three weeks remaining until the fight, former champion Charles Oliveira was suddenly left without a new opponent. As the UFC searched desperately for replacements, Mateusz Gamrot stepped in and accepted the Oliveira fight on short notice.

Gamrot is considered one of the most dangerous wrestlers within the lightweight division and currently holds the #8 ranking. In his previous outing, Gamrot secured a victory over Ľudovít Klein, successfully bouncing back from his disappointing split-decision loss against Dan Hooker in 2024.

After the official fight announcement, Gamrot’s hyped and excited reaction quickly gained massive online attention. Additionally, an old resurfaced video featuring UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov predicting Gamrot’s bright future went viral.

Future contender, brother, future contender. It’s very hard to stop wrestling. It’s very hard, you have to knock him out or you’re gonna lose.

Nurmagomedov has always admired skilled wrestlers, repeatedly emphasizing that wrestling remains the most effective base for modern MMA competition. During his prime, the ‘Eagle’ mauled his opponents with wrestling by taking them into the deep ocean. Following his retirement, his teammate, Islam Makhachev, did the same and even submitted Oliveira to win the lightweight belt.

However, Gamrot now faces the lightweight division’s most elite Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist, Charles Oliveira, who owns the promotion’s submission wins record. Initially, booking Oliveira versus Gamrot presented challenges, since ‘Do Bronx’ highlighted needing to completely change strategies against a wrestler instead.

Gamrot capitalized on this uncertainty, verbally attacking ‘Do Bronx’ and provoking him, ultimately pushing Oliveira into accepting the fight. Oliveira, in his last bout, got brutally knocked out by Ilia Topuria, which cost him the opportunity to regain his champion status.

Following the beatdown, many expected the fighter to take a gap, but the fighter shocked everyone by announcing his fight date. As fans showed concern, the Brazilian superstar confirmed that he was feeling good to entertain his fellow patriots.

Oliveira’s electrifying title run featured battles against some of the division’s biggest names, delivering memorable performances and unforgettable highlight-reel moments. However, after Rafael Fiziev’s withdrawal, Oliveira expressed frustration at the lightweight division, criticizing fighters for relying on trash talk instead. Dan Hooker, who had an ongoing beef with Oliveira, didn’t step in as a substitute.

Fellow countryman, Renato Moicano did showed interest in fighting but didn’t get the opportunity. Old rival Arman Tsarukyan also didn’t show any interest to face the Brazilian. Meanwhile, Benoit Saint-Denis, fresh off impressive UFC Paris victory, indicated interest in the UFC Rio bout. However, he also publicly turned down the offer to step in.

The former champion demanded serious competition, calling out opponents willing to face him rather than hiding behind social media. Following Mateusz Gamrot’s acceptance of the fight, Oliveira thanked him and promised fans a war at UFC Rio.

Opponent: Mateusz Gamrot. This is the guy we’re going to war with. The rest just wanted the hype, just wanted to talk nonsense. But that’s part of it, that’s how it is. That’s how they think it works. The lion is hungry, I’m full of desire.

Going into the fight, Oliveira has a strong opportunity to secure victory due to his experience and elite submission skills. However, many fans believe the veteran still hasn’t fully recovered from his previous loss, which could negatively impact performance. Nevertheless, this presents Oliveira with a chance to achieve victory in front of his loyal home crowd, supporting him consistently.
