This Saturday, Mateusz Gamrot will face former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira in the UFC Rio main event. Going into the fight, the Polish contender remains the underdog, yet his confidence has shown absolutely no signs of fading. It stands as the biggest challenge of Gamrot’s career, and to prepare, the fighter has made many personal sacrifices.

Initially, Oliveira was supposed to fight Rafael Fiziev, but the Azerbaijan native had to pull out due to an injury. As UFC searched for a late replacement, Gamrot stepped in and urged the Brazilian to accept the fight. The Polish star is excited for the bout and recently shared that he lives at the gym in order to stay focused.

I love this atmosphere, no distractions, no TV, no nothing. When I made the decision to come to American Top Team, my kids didn’t understand why daddy left the house, but every year it’s getting better….This is a hard decision; sometimes I cry in my room, but when I call my kids, this gives me energy.

Mateusz Gamrot represents the American Top Team gym in Florida, which is one of the best MMA camps globally. He has spent several years there improving his skills under elite coaches and refining every aspect of his MMA game. American Top Team has been a home to UFC stars like Dustin Poirier, Jorge Masvidal, and Kayla Harrison, among other top fighters.

The gym’s head coach, Mike Brown, oversees Gamrot’s training, while Poirier has also been one of his key sparring partners. Gamrot has been competing in the UFC for five years, yet he has struggled to maintain consistent winning momentum. Although he holds impressive victories over top fighters like Arman Tsarukyan and Rafael Fiziev, inconsistent performances have hindered his climb up the rankings.

Fighting a legend like Oliveira presents a massive opportunity for Mateusz Gamrot to secure victory and climb higher in the rankings. Gamrot is widely recognized for his wrestling skills, a strength he plans to fully utilize against Oliveira at UFC Rio. Despite being the betting underdog in this matchup, many experts genuinely believe that ‘Gamer’ has the ability to win Saturday.

Charles Oliveira’s last outing ended painfully, as Ilia Topuria knocked him out while he was attempting to reclaim the lightweight title. Fans were heartbroken, urging the beloved Brazilian to recover properly before stepping back into the octagon anytime soon. However, the ever-determined warrior shocked everyone by announcing a quick return, eager to fight in front of his home crowd.

While his warrior spirit is admired, many analysts believe this decision leaves him mentally and physically vulnerable after a brutal loss. Top lightweight and former rival Arman Tsarukyan also talked about UFC Rio in a recent interview and shared his prediction. The Armenian has already fought both the fighters and picked Mateusz Gamrot to beat the Brazilian superstar this weekend.

Gamrot is looking fresher now. Oliveira was just knocked out. But Gamrot is training and keeps himself in good shape all the time. So, probably he’s gonna win. He needs this win more. He’s hungry, he never fought such highly ranked opponent.

On the other hand, experts like Robert Whittaker believe the Brazilian’s striking will give him an edge over Gamrot’s pressure-heavy style. Oliveira has confidently dismissed any lingering doubts regarding his physical and mental readiness heading into this main event weekend.

The former champion has already set his sights beyond Gamrot, hinting at a potential BMF title clash against Max Holloway. At 35, it remains to be seen if the seasoned veteran can recapture his winning momentum once again.
